Andrew Cook Case
The man accused of killing a former Spencer High School student and her boyfriend has been executed. 38-year-old Andrew Cook was pronounced dead Thursday at 11:22p.m. in Jackson, Georgia. The Georgia Court of Appeals temporarily halted his execution Thursday morning. They temporarily stayed Cook’s execution to consider a challenge to the state’slethal injection procedure, but Georgia’s Supreme Court lifted the stay.
Cook was found guilty of two counts of malice murder and two counts of felony murder in the 1995 shooting deaths of Grant Hendrickson and former Spencer High School student Michele Cartagena. The jury in his trial recommended a death sentence for Cook’s murder of Ms. Cartagena after finding that her murder was committed during the commission of the murder of Mr. Hendrickson.
This comes just two days after a court of appeals granted Warren Lee Hill a stay of execution just minutes before he was set to die. They granted a stay on a challenge to the state’s lethal-injection procedure. The Federal Appeals Court granted one on the claim Hill is mentally challenged. He was serving a life sentence when he was convicted in the1990 death of a fellow inmate.
Cook was the first inmate to be executed since the state changed its execution procedure in July, he was the son of a former FBI agent.
