Chacey Poynter Case
A Royse City woman received the maximum punishment after being convicted of murder for the 2019 shooting death of her husband.
A jury in the 354th District Court sentenced Chacey Tyler Poynter to life in prison late Thursday night, after convicting her of the charge earlier in the day, said Hunt County District Attorney Noble D. Walker Jr.
“We certainly appreciate the jury’s hard work in this case and are grateful that this defendant was found guilty of murder and received a sentence of life in prison,” Walker said in a statement Friday afternoon.
The punishment hearing was conducted immediately after Poynter was convicted of murder, a lesser included count under the capital murder indictment she had received in April, for which she was facing a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
With the sentence on the murder charge, Chacey Poynter, 32, must serve at least 30 years before she can be considered eligible for parole.
She had pleaded not guilty to a charge of capital murder in connection with the death of her husband Robert Louis Poynter III, a University Park Fire Department captain.
Chacey Poynter had originally been indicted on a count of murder, until a Hunt County grand jury issued the capital murder indictment April 26, alleging she and Michael Glen Garza killed Robert Poynter for the victim’s money.
“Assistant District Attorney Jeff Kovach and First Assistant District Attorney Calvin Grogan did an outstanding job securing guilty verdicts and lengthy prison sentences in both Chacey Poynter and Michael Garza’s trials,” Walker said. “Also, Michael Burk with the Royse City Police Department, Texas Ranger Laura Simmons, and Phillip Spencer with the Greenville Police Department were instrumental in obtaining guilty verdicts for both defendants through their investigation of this case.”
Garza, of Quinlan, was found guilty by a jury following a two-week trial in July 2018 on a charge of murder and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. An appeal of his conviction is currently pending before the Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas.
“Mr. Poynter’s family members and friends remained involved during both prosecutions and we’re very pleased they were able to see both individuals responsible for this offense found guilty and sentenced to significant prison time,” Walker said.
The courtroom was often filled to capacity during the weeklong trial. Several of Robert Poynter’s fellow University Park Fire Department representatives were on hand for much of the testimony, along with representatives from the Royse City Police Department.
Royse City Police Department officers were dispatched at around 10:45 p.m. on Sept. 9, 2016 to an area on FM 35 near Hunt County Road 2595 regarding a woman in the roadway attempting to stop vehicles.
Officers spoke with Chacey Poynter, who said her husband had been shot and was in a vehicle located along the county road.
Officers went to investigate and found Robert Poynter in the vehicle deceased with a single shotgun blast to the head.
It was Chacey, not Garza, who shot her husband, Robert…..Chacey was covered with Roberts blood – her legs, arms and face and head, not to have been very close to him when he was shot…..
