Curtis Johnson Case

Curtis Lee Johnson, 38, convicted of murdering a man in a burglary that netted him $8 and a camera, was executed by lethal injection early Tuesday.

On Aug. 4, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to grant Johnson a stay of execution

Johnson was pronounced dead at 12:16 a.m. CDT.

‘Everyone that is participating is foregiven,’ Johnson said in his last words. He thanked his mother and his aunt — who were not present at the execution — for standying by him and said he loved them very much.

Johnson was convicted for the Sept. 24, 1983, murder of Murray Sweat, 25, during a burglary of Sweat’s apartment in Houston. Sweat was shot once in the chest as he entered the kitchen and surprised Johnson and an accomplice.

Police said the thieves got away with only $8 and a camera.

Johnson and the accomplice were arrested six days later during an armed robbery.

At the time of his arrest, Johnson was on parole for a 1977 Harris County armed robbery, police said. He had been sentenced to 45 years in prison for convictions of burglary, theft and armed robbery
