Damon Benson Case

A Rancho Cordova man was sentenced to 71 years to life in prison after killing a man involved in a love triangle that started on Tinder.

Damon Allen Benson, 31, was convicted of holding a woman against her will and torturing her on multiple occasions in his apartment, and murdering 48-year-old Cameron Gabriel, according to the Placer County District Attorney’s Office.

The homicide dates back to a suspicious death investigation in July 2021 on the 3900 block of East Midas Avenue.

The DA’s office says all three people met separately on Tinder and Benson tortured the then 29-year-old woman to find the address of her other lover.

While he initially claimed it was self-defense, the DA’s office says surveillance shows Benson running into the victim’s home in the middle of the night, shooting then running out of the home yelling “That’s right, [expletive].”

The Rocklin Police Department and district attorney filed multiple charges against him including: murder, aggravated mayhem, torture, felony criminal threats, false imprisonment by violence and more.

Damon Benson News

Years after a Tinder love triangle ended in murder and torture, Placer County officials on Tuesday said the man responsible was sentenced.

Damon Allen Benson, 31, will face 71 years to life in prison for the 2021 crimes, a release from the Placer County District Attorney’s Office read. A jury in September found him guilty of murder, torture and mayhem charges.

“This is a day for justice for the victim and the victim’s family,” Supervising Deputy District Attorney Jeffery Moore said in the release. “We recognize this verdict will not bring [the victim] back and that we cannot undo what this defendant has done to their family. We are humbled to provide justice for this horrific crime to the greatest extent our laws allow. The defendant shows a clear danger to the public and a callous disregard for human life. Removing Benson from society is the only way to ensure he doesn’t victimize anyone again.”

All three people met separately on Tinder, causing Benson to become jealous. On Aug. 21, officials said he held the woman captive against her will in his apartment. He tortured her multiple times, including an instance where he carved a swastika — the woman is Jewish — on her back while she was tied to his ceiling with rope.

Investigators found that he tortured her to get the address of her other lover. Once he found that out, Benson shot and killed him, claiming self-defense.

But the district attorney’s release explains that surveillance video showed Benson running into the other lover’s home in the middle of the night. Gunfire was heard, and Benson was seen running out of the home yelling, “That’s right, [expletive].”

“This, among many other factors, led the jury to decide that Benson murdered the victim with premeditation and intent,” the release read.
