Daniel Corwin Case

A man convicted of murdering three southeast Texas women in 1987 has been executed at Huntsville, becoming the first inmate put to death under the state’s serial killer statute. Forty-year-old Daniel Lee Corwin was pronounced dead at 6:33 CST today after receiving a lethal injection.

Corwin read a lengthy statement thanking ‘the people who have made a real big difference in my life,’ and apologized to victims’ family members who witnessed the execution. He said, ‘I regret what happened and I want you to know I’m sorry.’

Corwin, a native of Orange County, Calif., was convicted of the July 10, 1987, strangulation and stabbing death of Debra Ewing, who was abducted from a Prudential Insurance Office in Huntsville. He later confessed to the crime and the slayings of 72-year-old Alice Martin near her rural Madison County home north of Houston and Mary Risinger, whose body was found in a car wash in Huntsville. Prosecutors obtained a capital conviction under a new state law that allows the death penalty for a crime committed in a different criminal transaction but pursuant to the same scheme and course of conduct.

Corwin had a lengthy criminal record and was on parole for aggravated rape at the time of the 1987 murders. Corwin was the 20th Texas death row inmate executed this year and the 162nd since the state resumed the death penalty in 1982. Three more executions are scheduled this week
