Domingo Cantu Case
The Supreme Court on Wednesday denied a stay of execution for Domingo Cantu Jr., a 31-year-old Dallas man convicted in the 1988 rape and murder of a 94-year-old woman in her home. Justice John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg both indicated they voted to block the execution, scheduled for Thursday at Huntsville, Texas.
The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday that DNA analysis requested by Cantu’s lawyer failed to provide any reason to halt the execution. The DNA tests showed the blood of Suda Eller Jones matched the DNA profile of test samples taken from the T-shirt of Cantu. Assistant District Attorney Mike Carnes said the DNA comparison was ‘consistent with his guilt.’ Defense attorney David Sergi, who requested the analysis, said his client was disappointed with the results. The test was requested in hopes the comparison would not match and a new trial would be ordered. Sergi made the request after a panel on DNA evidence organized by Attorney General Janet Reno encouraged prosecutors and judges to reopen cases in which DNA evidence could prove a convict’s innocence.
