Eric Nenno Case

Although he had expressed regret days before he was put to death, Eric Charles Nenno had no last words before his Tuesday execution for the murder of a 7-year-old Hockley girl.

Nenno never glanced at the child’s father, Buddy Benton, as the man stoically looked on from behind a windowed room in Texas’ death house. Other family members, including Nicole Benton’s uncle, Donald Benton, also witnessed the execution.

“No, warden,” Nenno responded when asked if he had a final statement. He gasped four times and eight minutes later at 6:20 p.m., Nenno was pronounced dead.

In a recent interview from death row, Nenno was contrite about the 1995 murder and said he could not apologize enough to his victim’s family. He also said he was prepared to die. “My salvation is secure,” he told The Associated Press. “I know where I’m going when this is all over.”Asked where that would be, he replied: “Heaven.”

In 1995, Nicole Benton had been playing with her siblings and other children in the northwest Harris County neighborhood while her father played country music with friends in the garage nearby. It was his birthday. A woman who had been watching them as she packed a camper noticed she was no longer among the children. Beads that Nicole had been playing with were found strewn along the sidewalk.

She was reported missing and an exhaustive search was soon under way. During the investigation, a neighborhood resident told police they should talk to Nenno because he had tried to grab a 6-year-old girl two years before. Charges were not filed in that incident, records show.

When authorities approached him, Nenno said somebody like him, who fantasized about young girls, was likely behind the girl’s disappearance. He later confessed and told police that he had strangled then had sex with the girl’s corpse at his home. He then hid her naked body behind boxes in his attic over his garage. Her polka-dotted dress, glasses and shoes were found in his filing cabinet.
