Frank Middleton Case

A South Carolina man who killed two women after escaping from jail 12 years ago was executed early Friday for the rape and murder of one of his victims. Frank Middleton Jr., 33, was pronounced dead at 1:22 a.m., moments after he joked with witnesses before he received a lethal injection.

‘What are you people looking at. I’m going to the Promised Land,’ Middleton said, smiling as he moved behind a curtain to receive the injection. Middleton was convicted of the murder and rape of Shirley Mae Mack in 1984. Both Middleton and Mack were from North Charleston, S.C. Middleton was originally sentenced in 1985 for the June 10, 1984, murder of Mack and the rape and murder Janell Garner.

The murders occurred after he escaped from a prison work crew. Before his escape, he had been serving time for aggravated assault and battery. Middleton was later retried and received the death penalty for Mack’s slaying and life for murdering Garner. He was 22 when he was first convicted of raping and suffocating Mack and then burning her body in June 1994. He had raped, suffocated and stabbed Garner, 23, two days earlier, prosecutors said.

The South Carolina attorney general’s office said Middleton had exhausted all his appeals before the death warrant was issued. Death row inmates in South Carolina have a choice between lethal injection and the electric chair as their means of their death and Middleton chose the injection.
