Gregory Beaver Case
A man who shot a state trooper to death was executed by injection here Tuesday night as six law-enforcement officials watched.
Gregory Beaver, 30, was put to death for shooting Trooper Leo Whitt to death in 1985 after being stopped for a traffic violation on Interstate 95.
One of the six official witnesses, Trooper Carroll R. Turner, worked with Trooper Whitt for 16 years. Asked if he thought Mr. Beaver got what he deserved, Trooper Turner said, ”A little late, but yeah.”
After telling a hitchhiker that he had killed Trooper Whit, Mr. Beaver, of Brunswick, Md., was arrested about 25 miles from the scene of the crime. He pleaded guilty
Gregory Beaver had been wanted by the authorities in Maryland for fleeing an in-patient drug treatment program, which he had been ordered to complete in lieu of a lengthy prison term for 10 felony convictions.
After breaking out of the treatment program, Mr. Beaver assaulted and robbed his stepfather at the family’s restaurant in Maryland and then fled to Florida. He was on his way back north when he shot the trooper.
