According to court documents Herman Clark, who was a serial rapist who would be tied to over a hundred sexual assaults, would break into the home and attempt to sexually assault a woman. The woman’s boyfriend would interrupt him and a fight would break out where Clark would fatally shoot him. Herman would also shoot the female however she would survive her injuries

Herman Clark Case

Herman Clark shot Joseph McClain on April 4, 1981 during a fight in McClain’s apartment while trying to rape his girlfriend.  Clark had a lengthy history of attacking women and said during his final statement, “It was strictly my way of seeking love-perverted as it sounds.”

At the time of his arrest, Clark was wanted for the rape of 33 women.  Clark later confessed to the police that he had actually raped and attacked more than 100 women.

Clark was on death row for 13 years before he was finally put to death by lethal injection on December 6, 1994.  Clark was 48 years old when he was executed. 

Clark was born in Childress and raised in Fort Worth.  He competed two years of college and was working in a Houston plastics products company when he was arrested for the 1981 slaying of McClain.

Clark had a criminal history that consisted of burglaries and robberies and was on parole for those other offenses when he shot McClain.  While attempting to rape McClain’s girlfriend, he locked him and a 10-year-old boy in a bathroom.  McClain broke out of the bathroom when all three of the individuals wrestled on the floor for the gun.  The woman was wounded in the arm but was able to later assist police in the identification of Clark.

In his final statement, although he had not been through any formal type of rehabilitation for his crimes, Clark said that he was not the same person he was when he first came to death row.  “I have been transformed to a new creature.  I know absolutely I am a Christ-child and my Lord is getting ready to welcome me into his arms.”
