Juan Chavez Case

The Florida man who raped and murdered a 9-year-old boy in Miami-Dade County 18 years ago was executed Wednesday night.

Juan Carlos Chavez, 46, died by lethal injection Wednesday at Florida State Prison in Starke, but a last-minute appeal delayed the execution by more than two hours.

The 6 p.m. execution time passed while officials awaited a final ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. Chavez had raised legal challenges to Florida’s method of lethal injection, among other claims.

The Florida Supreme Court had denied a stay of execution for Chavez.

Chavez abducted Jimmy Ryce at gunpoint after the boy got off a school bus on Sept. 11, 1995, in rural southwestern Miami-Dade County. Chavez raped the boy, shot him when he tried to escape and then dismembered his body.

“If there was ever anyone in the world who deserved to die, it’s the man who did that,” Don Ryce said about the man who killed his son shortly after Gov. Rick Scott signed the death warrant in January.

Jimmy Ryce’s mother died of a heart attack in 2009, and his sister killed herself in 2012.

“There is a sense that the world is not quite right so long as that man still lives and so many of my family are dead,” Don Ryce said.

Don Ryce said he blames Chavez for their deaths.

“The tragedy was on their minds when they died,” he said.

Don Ryce said he never saw any remorse from Chavez.

“The only regret I’ve ever seen from him is getting caught,” he said.

Jimmy Ryce’s parents tried to alleviate the pain of the tragedy by pushing for laws regarding confinement of sexual predators and working to improve police procedures in missing child cases.
