Justice Knight Case

Justice Knight was convicted about a month ago of capital murder.

That same jury just a couple of weeks ago recommended—on an 11-1 vote that Knight be executed.

While not bound by the recommendation Circuit Judge Brad Mendheim concurred with the recommendation.

Knight was one of two men arrested in the 2012 shooting death of Jarvis Daffin.

A Henry County jury that recently returned guilty verdicts in a capital murder case went back to work Tuesday in the sentencing phase of the trial.

21-year old Knight was convicted September 30 for the robbery, kidnapping, and shooting death of Jarvis Daffin in 2012. His body was dumped in a rural area near the Tumbleton community.

After hearing testimony—expected to conclude Wednesday—the jury will deliberate before recommending punishment to Circuit Judge Brad Mendheim.

The alternatives are death or life in prison without the possibility of parole. Mendheim is not bound by the recommendation.

A second defendant in the case will be tried later.

Justice Knight News

A state appeals court has upheld the capital murder convictions of a man sentenced to die for killing a friend in southeast Alabama six years ago.

The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals refused Friday to overturn the conviction of Justice Jerrell Knight in the killing of Jarvis Daffin in Henry County in 2012.

The decision says authorities found Daffin’s body with a gunshot wound to the head and arrested Knight. Evidence indicated the man was killed after cashing his tax refund check.

Knight argued in his appeal that jurors could have been turned against him because they saw him in jail clothes and restraints. Knight also challenged courtroom procedures and the makeup of the jury that convicted him and recommended death.

The court unanimously upheld his conviction and death sentence
