Bridget Forehand Case

A 16-year-old Vancleave girl pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder in the shooting death of a beloved son, brother and friend.

Bridgett Leann Forehand, then 14, shot and killed Mickell Avery Gordon, 19, of Ocean Springs, in the early morning hours of March 10, 2021. She was charged as an adult in the crime.

Though Forehand said she had been drinking alcohol that night and didn’t remember shooting Gordon, she entered the guilty plea and took responsibility for her actions. The prosecutors said others witnessed the shooting as well.

Forehand used a gun she had stolen from a friend’s friend to commit the murder. She told the judge she thought she needed the weapon for protection. “When a 14-year-old thinks they need a gun and have no idea how to use a gun, that’s what happens,” Jackson said before sentencing Forehand. “It’s sad. It’s really pitiful. You are ruining their lives. You are ruining your life. “

Judge Kathy King Jackson sentenced Forehand to 40 years in prison but suspended 25 years. She’ll serve 15 years day-for-day, plus 25 years under post-release supervision.

Assistant District Attorney Carolyn Lewis said the state recommended the sentence after consulting with Gordon’s family, and they agreed to the sentence.

Devastated by his death, Gordon’s family told the judge their lives hadn’t been the same since losing the teen

“Mickell had dreams and aspirations,’ his mother, Candace Gordon, said before sentencing. “He wanted to become an accountant for the IRS. ‘

She said her son was a “great person” who had played basketball and baseball in high school and served as head of the student council at Ocean Springs High School.

“He has traveled the world with me as a military kid and thrived everywhere we went,” Candace Gordon said. “Because of this senseless murder, Mickell’s future was cut short. I will never see Mickell get married or have kids of his own. Not a day has passed that I don’t mourn the loss of my son. As a mother that no longer has her child here, I live in pain every day. I live in guilt. I live in fear. I worry that my other kids will be taken from me.”
The killing of an Ocean Springs teen

The shooting happened after Forehand and another girl met up with a guy the friend they had been talking to on Snapchat.

Gordon was staying the night with his friend, and the two had been playing video games when the girls came over. The four drank some alcohol and walked around the friend’s neighborhood in the Fontainbleu community.

Gordon didn’t know Forehand but knew the other girl, who was over 18.

Bridget Forehand said she had lied about her age.

After the four walked for a while, they returned to the home to get warmer clothing for the girls. When they left again, witnesses told authorities the girl pulled out a handgun and started waving it around. The girl fired the gun, with the bullet hitting Gordon in the forehead.

When Jackson County sheriff’s deputies got to the scene, they found Gordon lying in the road near Center Street and Spruce Street intersection with the fatal gunshot wound.

By then, the girls had run off, but Forehand was captured a short time later.

A history of mental illness

During her plea Monday, Bridget Forehand said she didn’t remember shooting and killing Forehand.

She said she didn’t remember much after the second time they left the boy’s home to walk around some more.

“I blacked out,” she said. “I don’t exactly remember what happened after that.”

She said she realized what she had done after “woke up in a holding cell at the ADC (The Jackson County jail).”

“I didn’t even understand why I was there,” she said.

But according to prosecutors, those at the scene saw the girl shoot and kill Gordon.

Bridget Forehand has a history of mental illness, saying she suffers from depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other conditions. She has received inpatient treatment at two facilities in Mississippi and a third in Louisiana.

She said she usually had issues when she didn’t take her medicine.

Bridget Forehand’s grandfather had gotten custody of her just two days before the killing.

He and the girl’s aunt went to court Monday. When the judge imposed the sentence, the girl’s aunt put her face in her hands and sobbed as Gordon’s mother and other relatives did throughout the hearing.

Joshua Keyzer Case

There are new developments Monday in the case of a West Michigan teenager who was just 16-years-old when he killed his cousin.

Monday morning the teen was sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison.

Now his family is starting to move forward after these very brutal crimes.

Joshua Keyzer learned his fate at the Allegan County Courthouse

Last month a plea deal was reached and he pleaded guilty to felony murder and rape charges.

The vicious attacks happened in June of last year at his grandmother’s house in Wayland.

Keyzer stabbed his cousin, 21-year-old Kassandra Keyzer, to death in a rape attempt.

He then slashed his grandmother’s throat and then hid on the roof from police.

His grandmother survived the attack, but later died from cancer.

Monday, Kassandra’s mother gave a statement to the court. She says the young mother was cut down in the prime of her life, just a month after getting married.

She says this murder has torn her family apart.

“The terror she endured is incomprehensible and cruel. The crime affects all of our lives. Our contentment, peace and joy as a family is forever gone. Taken by someone we loved. We loved you,” said Karen Lonar. “Our family is taking this day by day, living life without Kassandra invokes hopelessness, anger and great bitterness. There are no actions you can do on earth to ever bring Kassandra back to our family. You need to be put away so that this never happens again.”

Joshua Keyzer did not speak in court Monday. However, his lawyer says while in prison the teen hopes to receive treatment and understand what caused his behavior.

Gregory Ramos Case

A Florida teenager has pleaded guilty to murder charges, admitting he killed his mother and buried her body under a church fire pit.

Gregory Ramos pleaded guilty on Wednesday to first-degree Murder , abuse of a body and tampering with evidence.

Now 17, Ramos was 15 years old in 2018 when he got into a fight with his mother over his grades, the Orlando Sentinel reports. He admitted to strangling 46-year-old Gail Cleavenger, then calling two friends to help him bury her body and stage a robbery at his house.

He was charged as an adult.

During court proceedings, Ramos’ public defender told the judge the teen regrets his actions and is trying to better himself behind bars.

“He’s extremely remorseful and he regrets his actions every day,” Matthew Phillips, Ramos’ public defender, told the court, according to WKMG-TV, “and he’s been trying to be productive; while he’s been in custody, he has been obtaining a high school diploma.”

Ramos initially called 911 after arriving home from school on November 2, 2018. When detectives arrived, he told them he came home to discover that the house had been robbed. He alleged that his mother was missing, but her van was still running in the driveway.

Upon further interrogation, Ramos changed his story, saying that they fought over a “D” grade he’d received in school. During the altercation, he strangled her. He said it took about 30 minutes for him to kill her.

He then called two friends to help him cover up the killing. They have both been charged as adults with being accessories after the fact to a capital felony. They have both pleaded not guilty.

Ramos faces 45 years in prison on the first-degree murder charge, but the case can be reviewed after 25 years because he was a minor when he killed his mother. Ramos’ plea asks that he serve sentences for the two lesser charges concurrently with the murder charge. Upon his release, he will spend the rest of is life on probation.

He will be sentenced in January 2021.

Frederick Lochridge Case

A TEENAGER whose confession was “like talking to a 30-year-old murderer” has been charged with the murder of his younger sister.

Investigators were left reeling by their chilling interview in which 15-year-old Florida boy Fred Lochridge changed his story three times as he was questioned about the death of 10-year-old Izabella Heffernan on Sunday.

“This is not the typical 15-year-old kid you would see every day on the street,” County Bay Sheriff Frank McKeithen told a news conference.

“This is a hardcore kid. He lied, he was deceitful, he screamed, he cursed.

“He was like talking to a 30-year-old murderer.”

The body of Izabella, described as ‘the type of kid who would come sit by you if you were having a bad day’, was found in bushland just hours after she was reported missing from her home in Fountain, Florida.

She was clad in a sundress, covered in towels, and had suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and head.

Fred Lochridge now faces a charge of second degree murder, with the Bay County Sheriff’s office saying he had admitted to killing his sister — but changed his story several times.

According to the arrest affidavit, as questioning unfolded, Frederick Lochridge admitted he shot his sister, first telling police he thought he was shooting at a deer when he fired the .22 calibre rifle in the early hours of Sunday morning, hitting Izabella in the chest and face.

Then his story changed, with him insisting he tried to shoot someone who was attacking his sister, but accidentally shot her instead.

In his final version of the story, he claimed he accidentally shot Izabella in the chest while teaching her to shoot.

He thought he had hit her in the lungs, and told investigators: “She stared making gurgling noises, and I did not know exactly how to deal with that, so I shot her again.”

He then said he had moved her body, cleaned it up, clothed her in a white dress, and moved it to the location where it was finally discovered.

Mr McKeithen’s statement came during an emotional press conference after ‘the weekend from hell’, according to the Panama City News Herald.

Mr McKeithen said officers were especially shaken when they found out Izabella had been shot by her older stepbrother.

“You never get used to it, but we pretty much know what it’s about; then we got the call of a missing 10-year-old, and that changed a lot of the emotions of our officers,” Mr McKeithen told the press conference.

“We have investigators that have children that age. When we had to go back and see the scene, see her, it really touched these guys. After being up all night investigating this other horrific crime, and now we’re going to find a 10-year-old dead girl.”

Mr McKeithen said the only thing certain that came out of the police interview with Frederick Lochridge was that he was unlike an average teenager.

As the questioning unfolded, they realised they were dealing with a killer perhaps far beyond his years.

Jedidiah Murphy Case

The state of Texas executed Jedidiah Murphy by lethal injection Tuesday for the carjacking murder of a 79-year-old Garland woman in 2000.

Lawyers for Murphy, 48, had filed multiple requests in state and federal court to have his execution postponed because of issues with execution drugs and DNA testing of evidence.

Those requests were denied Tuesday, and he was killed Tuesday night, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirmed.

In his final words recorded by TDCJ, Murphy expressed remorse.

“To the family of the victim I want to say I sincerely apologize for all I did,” he said. “I hope this brings you closure, thank you.”

He then recited a version of Psalm 34 of the New Testament, and another verse from the Bible.

Murphy was convicted in 2001 for shooting and killing Bertie Lee Cunningham after forcing her to give him a ride at gunpoint, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday granted Texas’ request to lift a pause on Murphy’s execution.

In its request, the Texas attorney general’s office argued Murphy’s claims came too late in the process and that his reasoning didn’t show how new DNA evidence would prove his innocence.

A lower federal court first halted the execution in part because Murphy’s lawyers successfully argued the DNA evidence used to prove he was a future danger to the public was insufficient. They requested new testing of that evidence.

The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals declined to lift the stay of execution, ruling it should be on hold while they weighed in on a similar case, Gutierrez v. Saenz.

The Fifth Circuit heard oral argument in that case Sept. 20 but did not issue a ruling before the Supreme Court’s order Tuesday night.

Murphy’s lawyers also argued in both federal and state courts to halt the execution because of a recent fire at the Huntsville prison, which they said made the lethal injection drugs unsafe and would constitute “cruel and unusual punishment.”

Both the U.S. Supreme Court and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals — the state’s highest criminal court — denied those requests.

Tuesday is also World Day Against the Death Penalty.
