Alex Madrid Case

Over a decade after the death of a 14-year-old Mesa girl, a man accused of her murder was found guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court on Wednesday.

After a 27-day trial, a jury found Alex Madrid guilty on all counts in the murder of Claudia Lucero.

Claudia’s body was discovered in December 2013 in a dumpster two miles from her family’s apartment.

Madrid had ended a relationship with Lucero’s mother earlier that year, and the prosecution argued that he had access to the family’s apartment and intended to sexually assault Claudia.

Prosecutors said that Madrid got into the Luceros’ apartment the morning of Claudia’s death. They said he sexually assaulted Claudia, murdered her and tried to get rid of her body by disposing of it in a dumpster.

The prosecution presented DNA evidence of Madrid’s semen found on Lucero, along with GPS records placing him near the location of her body at the time of her death.

The defense argued Madrid had an alibi for the time frame during which the prosecution said Claudia was killed.

The jury deliberated for less than an hour before finding Madrid guilty on charges of kidnapping, sexual conduct with a minor, second-degree burglary, abandonment or concealment of a dead body, unlawful flight from law enforcement and first-degree murder.

Madrid faces the possibility of the death penalty, with a sentencing hearing set to begin Oct. 9.

A jury has found Alex Madrid guilty in the murder of a teenager over a decade ago.

Madrid was found guilty of first degree murder, kidnapping, and sexual contact with a minor. The victim in the case, Claudia Ann Lucero, was killed in 2013, and per our previous reports, Madrid had recently broken up with Lucero’s mother at the time the murder happened. Lucero’s body was found in a dumpster located two miles from her home in Mesa. Lucero was 14 at the time of her death.

According to the Medical Examiner, the victim was strangled and sexually assaulted, and DNA tied Madrid to the crime.

The sentencing phase of Madrid’s trial is set to begin on Oct. 9, when a jury will decide whether Madrid will be put to death or spend his life behind bars.

Murad Dervish Murders Thomas Meixner In Arizona

Murad Dervish

Murad Dervish is a killer from Arizona who was convicted of the murder of Thomas Meixner

According to court documents Murad Dervish would enter the University of Arizona and would go to the office of Professor Thomas Meixner who he would shoot nearly a dozen times

A year earlier Murad Dervish who was a Graduate student at the time was expelled from the University Of Arizona for threatening staff and faculty including Thomas Meixner. Dervish was also banned from the University campus

Along with the murder of Thomas Meixner Murad Dervish was also convicted of aggravated assault for firing a bullet at the building manager

Murad Dervish when he was arrested still had the weapon and ammunition which police would match to the crime scene

Now Murad Dervish faces life in prison when he faces sentencing later this year

Murad Dervish Case

A jury on Tuesday found the man accused of fatally shooting a University of Arizona professor on campus in 2022 guilty of murder after just under three hours of deliberation.

The jury also found him guilty of a slew of other charges, including one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of burglary and three counts of endangerment.

Murad Dervish, 48, was found guilty of first-degree murder after he shot Thomas Meixner, the head of the university’s Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, on Oct. 5, 2022.

Meixner’s widow, Kathleen, broke down in tears after the judge read out the jury verdict. A group of people surrounded Kathleen and hugged her, with one saying: “We got justice for him.”

Dan South, an attorney representing Meixner’s family, echoed that sentiment.

“The family feels like justice was served,” he said.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for June 24 at 1:30 p.m.

Dervish was a graduate student who was eventually expelled and prohibited from being on campus. He was accused of threatening Meixner and other faculty and university staff for more than a year.

During the trial, the prosecution led by the Pima County Attorney’s Office recounted the moments before Meixner was killed, just before 2 p.m., detailing how Meixner ran for his life down a hallway in the Harshbarger Building and into a classroom. Dervish emptied his magazine, in total shooting Meixner 11 times.

Dervish fled the building in a van. Three hours later, he was caught driving on Highway 85 toward Mexico. Dervish refused to stop for police, leading officers on a chase for two to three miles. His car was successfully stopped using a PIT maneuver.

Dervish’s attorney wanted his client to be found guilty except insane, telling the jury in closing arguments Monday his client “lost his mind in that moment.”

Murad Dervish News

A former University of Arizona graduate student was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a hydrology professor on campus, months after he was expelled.

A Pima County Superior Court jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching a verdict against Murad Dervish, 48, in the death of Thomas Meixner, who was shot 11 times near his office in October 2022.

Dervish also was convicted of five other felony counts, including aggravated assault for a bullet that grazed a building manager. Dervish, who showed no emotion as the verdicts were read, is set to be sentenced on June 24. He could face life in prison.

Meixner, 52, headed the university’s Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. Dervish was in the master’s degree program in atmospheric sciences.

Authorities said Dervish was banned from the school in January 2022 and later expelled for ongoing issues with professors after he received a bad grade.

Defense attorney Leo Masursky told jurors in his closing argument Monday that Dervish was having a psychotic episode during the shooting and that the crime wasn’t premeditated.

He said jurors should hold Dervish accountable but urged them to consider a lesser charge of second-degree murder that could have meant confinement in a psychiatric hospital, rather than a prison cell.

“Murad Dervish lost his mind on Oct. 5, 2022,” Masursky said. “He had severe mental health issues. He did not know right from wrong.”

But Pima County prosecutor Mark Hotchkiss said evidence showed Dervish planned Meixner’s killing and bought — a 9 mm handgun — a month before using it in the shooting.

“He is not guilty but insane. He’s just guilty,” Hotchkiss said of Dervish.

According to a criminal complaint, a flyer with a photograph of Dervish was circulated to university staff in February 2022 with instructions to call 911 if Dervish ever entered the John W. Harshbarger Building, where Meixner worked.

The complaint also said Dervish was barred from school property and was the subject of several reports of harassment and threats to staff members working at Harshbarger.

Witnesses testified that Dervish was wearing a surgical mask and baseball cap as a disguise when he showed up outside Meixner’s office and shot the professor.

Dervish fled the scene but was arrested three hours later after Arizona state troopers stopped his car on a highway more than 120 miles northwest of Tucson.

Authorities said a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle, and the ammunition was consistent with the shell casings found at the shooting scene.

Christopher Clements Murders Isabel Celis

Christopher Clements is a killer from Arizona who was convicted of the murder of six year old Isabel Celis

According to court documents six year old Isabel Celis was taken from her bedroom in the middle of the night and the little girls body would be found years later

Around the same time period thirteen year old Maribel Gonzalez would disappear as she was walking to a friends home. Her body would be found days later in the desert

Christopher Clements would become a suspect in both murders when he offered to tell Officers where to find the body of Isabel Celis if they dropped a burglary charge that was pending against him.

Officers would get enough evidence to charge Christopher Clements in both the murder of Isabel Celis and Maribel Gonzalez

Christopher Clements would be convicted of the murder of Maribel Gonzalez and sentenced to life in prison

Christopher Clements would then be convicted of the murder of Isabel Celis and again he would be sentenced to life in prison ensuring this monster will never be free

Christopher Clements Case

A man convicted of killing a 6-year-old Tucson girl, whose body was found years later in a remote desert area, was sentenced Wednesday to a natural life prison term.

Before sentencing, Christopher Clements read a rambling statement in court and said he didn’t feel he was given a fair trial.

“I still maintain my innocence,” said Clements, who declined to testify in his own defense during his trial.

Two months ago, the 42-year-old was found guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping and burglary in the death of Isabel Celis, who vanished from her parents’ home in 2012.

“Until the day I die, I will feel responsible for not doing my job and protecting my little girl from the evil that lurked outside her window,” her father, Sergio Celis, told the court Wednesday.

Clements became a suspect in Isabel Celis’ death in 2017 when he told FBI agents that he could lead them to the girl’s remains in exchange for having charges in an unrelated burglary case dropped, according to Tucson police. He had said he had nothing to do with her death.

“He took her childhood away from her,” Becky Celis, the girl’s mother, said about Clements. “In my opinion, Christopher has no remorse… His punishment should be natural life in prison with no parole.”

Clements’ Feb. 29 conviction came in a retrial of the Celis case after a different Pima County Superior Court jury failed to reach a verdict in 2023.

Judge James Marner also sentenced Clements on Wednesday to a 17-year prison term for kidnapping and 3 ½ years for burglary, all to be served consecutively to previous convictions.

Clements already is serving a natural life prison sentence for the 2014 killing of 13-year-old Maribel Gonzalez, who disappeared while walking to a friend’s house. Her body was found days later, also in a desert area.

Clements was arrested in 2018 in the deaths of the two girls. He was sentenced in 2022 for kidnapping and killing Gonzalez.

Christopher Clements News

For some people the kidnapping and killing of 6-year-old Isabel Celis is burned into their memory. It happened 12 years ago, but just imagine the terror of a girl who disappears from the family house and is never seen alive again.

Now we know the punishment for the man convicted in that murder.

There was no sign of Isabel Celis until five years after she disappeared, when Christopher Clements offered to take investigators to her in return for getting unrelated charges dropped. He said he didn’t kill her, but simply knew what he knew.

He took them to a small collection of bones in a remote part of Pima County. He became a suspect in two child deaths when a partial DNA match tied him to the remains of another girl found nearby: 13-year-old Maribel Gonzales.

Isabel’s parents, Becky and Sergio, did not want to appear on camera as they spoke in court but their voices carry a grief that will not go away.

“The Bible speaks of God's wrath, and it has been shown to be great. He has hurt many many little ones, including my baby girl Isabel. Punishment in this world will never be enough for the amount of pain and suffering he has caused. God, Karma, Mother Earth, whatever you believe in. All of this has a way of making things right that no one can escape.”

~Becky Celis

“Myself, until the day I die, I will feel responsible for not doing my job and protecting my little girl from the evil that lurked outside her window.”

~Sergio Celis

The law allows Clements to speak. The Celis family had stepped out of the courtroom by the time he did. He claimed his innocence, complained Judge James Marner ran an unfair trial and compared him to dictators from history.

“I’ve read a lot of books about village hangings carried out by the Crown in the Middle Ages, Hitler’s fascist government, Pol Pot and his ruthless Khmer Rouge regime. And yes, Joseph Stalin’s purges and show trials.”

Judge Marner gave Clements a sentence doubly sure to keep him behind bars: life without parole. That sentence does not begin until after the life without parole Clements got for killing Maribel Gonzalez.

Clements’ lawyers are already planning an appeal.

Michael Miller Case

Authorities say a man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and daughter and wounding his young son in a suspected domestic violence incident Saturday at their Glendale home.

Police say 29-year-old Michael Miller is being held on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.

They say Miller is accused of killing his 28-year-old wife Adreana Miller and their 10-year-old daughter.

The couple’s 4-year-old son remains in critical condition at a Glendale-area hospital but authorities say the boy is expected to survive.

Police won’t say how the mother and daughter were killed or what caused the boy’s injuries.

Officers say Michael Miller called 911 and was outside the home when they arrived at the scene about 5 a.m. Saturday.

Michael Miller Sentencing

Michael Miller stood remorseless as he listened to his sister-in-law give an account of the unfortunate event in which he killed his wife and daughter.

Araceli Santoyo described her sister, Adriana Miller, as a loving wife who cared deeply for Michael Miller in spite of his mental derangement.

Yet, she said, Michael blatantly betrayed Adriana, murdering her and the couple’s daughter in a fit of ire.

“She would have done anything and everything for you,” Santoyo told Michael Miller.

“She could never have imagined in her worst nightmares that one day she would have to try to protect herself from you.”

Michael Miller was sentenced to life in prison for the killings of his wife and 10-year-old daughter.

Miller was slammed an additional 10½ year sentence for attempting to murder his 4-year-old son.

In October, Michael , 29, pleaded guilty to using a kitchen knife to stab his wife and daughter to death.

Michael also admitted attempting to kill his son, but the boy survived narrowly.

The state had wanted the death penalty for Miller, but Judge Paul McMurdie of Maricopa County Superior Court withdrew the request at the urging of the victim’s family.

Plenty of emotional relatives watched the proceedings from the courtroom gallery.

Michael’s brother, Mitchell Miller, sobbed as he addressed the court, claiming Michael Miller was a great husband and father but suffered from a deteriorating mental illness.

Michael Miller is supposedly bipolar and schizophrenic.

“I know with all my heart that the man I know did not do this,” Mitchell Miller said.

He described how the family constantly worried about Miller’s condition, fearing whether he was having his medication and getting enough sleep.

“Every time we thought Mike was getting better, there was another setback,” Mitchell said.

According to a Glendale police, Michael Miller called 911 on May 30, 2009 to report he had just murdered his family.

Michael told police he lost control after getting into an argument with his wife about not sleeping enough the night before.

Michael said “God and Lucifer” told him to kill them and that he was “consumed by Satan.” Michael Miller said he was angry but did not understand why he was so enraged.

Police who reacted to the call found Miller’s son was breathing and the boy was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. Miller’s wife and daughter were found lifeless on the dining-room floor.

Prosecutors say an Arizona woman has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a man and taking his truck.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said 24-year-old Judith Walthers was sentenced Friday in the death of 54-year-old Kevin Worzalla.

Authorities say they were called to a Mesa apartment in February 2014 to check the welfare of a tenant who had not been heard from for several days. They found Worzalla’s body with multiple injuries and stab wounds.

Neighbors told police Walthers had been storing her belongings at Worzalla’s home and had been using his vehicle.

At the time, police had said DNA from Walthers was found on bloody items at the crime scene and there was evidence that she allegedly attempted to clean the crime scene.

A woman was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for the 2014 murder of a Mesa man she had been staying with, court officials said.

Judith Elaine Walthers was sentenced for first-degree murder under the terms of a plea deal that call for her to serve at least 25 years in prison before any possible release, court officials said..

Walthers was sentenced for the January 2014 murder of 54-year-old Kevin Worzalla, who was found dead inside his Mesa residence.

Police found his body with signs of trauma after being asked to check on him by family members, who were concerned because they hadn’t heard from him for a week.

Police said his vehicle and other property were missing from his apartment and that Walthers, who was 20 at the time, had been staying with Worzalla. Walthers’ DNA was found on bloody items located at the crime scene, officials said.

In addition to pleading guilty to the murder, Walthers also entered guilty pleas for several other counts related to the crime, which will have to be served consecutively on top of the murder sentence, court officials said. They are:

Sale or transportation of dangerous drugs, 8 years.
Theft of a means of transportation, 4 years.

Judith Walthers Other News

oday Judith Walthers (D.O.B. 05/26/1993) was sentenced to Life in Prison for First Degree Murder, in addition to four years for Theft of Means of Transportation and two years for Second Degree Escape all connected to the death of 54-year-old Kevin Worzalla.

“Today’s sentencing holds this defendant accountable for her shocking lack of regard for human life and the threat she has proven to be to the community,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery.

On February 4, 2014 officers were called to a Mesa apartment to the check the welfare of a tenant that the landlord had not seen for several days. Inside officers found the body of Worzalla with multiple injuries and stab wounds. Neighbors told officers Walthers, who was homeless, had been storing her belongings at Worzalla’s home and had been using his vehicle, which was now missing.

A day later officers located Walthers and arrested her for an outstanding warrant for previous drug charges. While in custody she claimed she had a medical emergency and was taken to a nearby hospital. Once at the hospital she escaped from her escort and tried to hide in the ceiling of the emergency room.

Family and friends of the suspect told investigators Walthers liked the thrill of robbing people and had made several comments to them about wanting to “kill an old man” for his truck prior to the murder.
