Christian Sims Case

Christian Vernon Sims pleaded guilty in court Tuesday to first degree murder.

Sims received 35 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his grandmother, Annie Lois Sims, in December 2014.

“Domestic homicide cases are challenging to prosecute,” said Lamar County District Attorney Gary Young. “The emotional toll on a family is heightened when the offender and the victim are both members of the same family. Finding a resolution that is acceptable to all parties is almost impossible. Mike Sims, husband of the victim, would have preferred a longer prison term but relied on the experience of our office to negotiate an acceptable plea.”

Annie Lois Sims, 66, a former North Lamar teacher, was found dead in her Powderly home with multiple gunshot wounds a week before Christmas 2014.

Christian Sims and Morrison were arrested at a Motel 6 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, later that night. The teens waived extradition and were returned to Lamar County on Dec. 23, 2014.

Christian Sims was represented by Jason Parrish and Gena Bunn of Homes and Moore.

He will remain in Lamar County Jail until he is transferred to prison, according to First Assistant District Attorney Jill Drake.

Charges are still pending against Ashley Morrison for burglary of a habitation and first degree murder in a related case. She remains in Lamar County Jail.

Kyle Dermody and Trey Stewart-Gayle Murder Nathaniel Shani

Kyle Dermody and Trey Stewart-Gayle
Kyle Dermody and Trey Stewart-Gayle

Kyle Dermody and Trey Stewart-Gayle are two teen killers from England who would murder fourteen year old Nathaniel Shani

According to court documents fourteen year old Kyle Dermody and thirteen year old Trey Stewart-Gayle had a falling out with Nathaniel Shani. The three young teens agreed to meet in a alley to settle their differences in a fist fight however the two teen killers came armed with a knife and screwdriver. Nathaniel would be stabbed causing his death

Kyle Dermody and Trey Stewart-Gayle would be arrested and ultimately convicted of the murder

The two teen killers would be sentenced to life in prison however due to their young ages at the time of the murder Kyle Dermody is eligible for release after thirteen years and Trey Stewart-Gayle after ten years

Kyle Dermody and Trey Stewart-Gayle Case

The teen killers found guilty of murdering 14-year-old Nathaniel Shani when they were just 14 and 13 have been named for the first time.

Kyle Dermody, now 15, knifed Nathaniel to the neck in Harpurhey, after a row over cannabis.

A second teen, 14-year-old Trey Stewart-Gayle, was also convicted of murder.

Stewart-Gayle, then 13, who had been armed with a screwdriver, was found to have ‘encouraged and assisted’ Dermody.

Reporting restrictions have been in force prohibiting both teenagers from being named in press reports surrounding Nathaniel’s murder.

However, their names have now been disclosed for the first time.

n her ruling, High Court judge Mrs Justice Ellenbogen said: “The public will wish to know the identities of those who commit such a serious offence in seeking to understand how it is that children of that age can do so. Knife crime in general and the circumstances of this particular case are matters of substantial public interest.”

Last month, the pair were both detained at His Majesty’s Pleasure, the youth equivalent of a life sentence. Dermody will have to serve at least 13 years, while Stewart-Gayle was ordered to be detained for at least ten years.

When she sentenced them, the judge said of their victim: “That a boy of his age should have met his death by boys of a similar age is a tragedy – sadly it is no longer shocking.”

The trial heard that Nathaniel died following a row over cannabis theft.

Nathaniel and Kyle Dermody, who had previously been friends and attended Manchester Communications Academy together, had met in an alleyway off Tavistock Square on September 15 last year as part of a ‘fight to settle differences’.

There had previously been a ‘fall out’ between Dermody and Nathaniel and they had ‘engaged in physical fights’.

Nathaniel was said to have ‘viewed himself as a hard kid’ who was ‘interested in a reputation that matched that’.

Prior to his death, Nathaniel had become involved in ‘street level’ drug dealing ‘through people older than him’.

Detectives told the Manchester Evening News that he had been exploited by a dealer, and had only been involved for about two weeks prior to his murder. Police said Nathaniel’s family had no idea of his association with drugs.

On the day of the killing, cannabis had been stolen from a friend of Nathaniel’s by Stewart-Gayle. Nathaniel was said to have viewed the incident as a ‘loss of face’ and was ‘determined’ to get the drugs back.

An arrangement was made for a ‘one v one fight’ to ‘sort things’. Nathaniel arrived in the square at about 6pm and met with the pair.

Stewart-Gayle was said to have ‘tried to egg him on’. During the ensuing confrontation Nathaniel punched Dermody, who produced a knife and stabbed him to the neck. Stewart-Gayle told Dermody to ‘do it’ after he had produced the weapon.

Nathaniel was seen clutching his neck after being knifed, before collapsing in the square. He was pronounced dead at 7.08pm.

During the trial, Dermody claimed that he believed that Nathaniel had a knife, and said he was acting in self-defence.

Stewart-Gayle handed himself in to police the following day. In a prepared statement he said he had taken the screwdriver from Dermody, but denied intending to use it.

He said Nathaniel had disarmed him of it and threw it at Dermody. Stewart-Gayle admitted taking cannabis from another boy. Both boys were found guilty of murder after a trial.

Sentencing, the judge said: “Whatever his flaws, Nathaniel did not deserve to die and not in such a violent way.

“He deserved the opportunity to better himself and to make a positive contribution to society.

“Unlike you, and by reason of your senseless behaviour he will never now be able to do so.”

Chloe Coplen-Anderson Murders Newborn

Chloe Coplen-Anderson
Chloe Coplen-Anderson

Chloe Coplen-Anderson is a teen killer from Nebraska who would stab to death her newborn minutes after the child was born

According to court documents sixteen year old Chloe Coplen-Anderson would give birth inside of her bedroom and soon after would slit the newborns throat and stab the baby to death. Chloe would then put the dead newborn into a dog food bag which she then hid under a pile of clothes in the closet

The parents of Chloe Coplen-Anderson would make the gruesome discovery and would call the police.

Chloe Coplen-Anderson would be arrested and charged with murder. Eventually the teen killer would plead no contest to second degree murder and would be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for twenty years

Chloe Coplen-Anderson Case

A 17-year-old Nebraskan charged as an adult with murdering her newborn son by cutting his throat, stabbing the baby to death, placing the body inside a dog food bag under clothes inside a bedroom closet and then going to the store is looking at two decades to life behind bars after pleading no contest.

Sheridan County Attorney Jamian Simmons confirmed to Law&Crime that Chloe Coplen-Anderson was found guilty of second-degree murder on Tuesday after entering the no contest plea in court as part of a plea agreement, resolving the case that was initially charged as a premeditated first-degree murder committed in the course of felony child abuse and with the use of a deadly weapon, a knife.

When details of the case against then 16-year-old Chloe Coplen-Anderson first emerged, local ABC affiliate NTV said the Gordon Police Department responded to her home after the teen’s parents found a horrific blood-covered scene in their daughter’s bedroom on Nov. 6, 2023, when the deceased newborn’s remains were found in an “empty plastic dog food bag and a trash bag in the teen’s closet covered with clothes” while the defendant was out at a store.

While Coplen-Anderson’s father reportedly believed the newborn had been stillborn, her mother shouted to a responding officer that she, Chloe, “hurt him,” the baby, and that “you can see the marks.”

Authorities reportedly confirmed that the newborn had been stabbed several times and had a cut throat.

The Star-Herald reported that the parents earlier that day noticed that Coplen-Anderson grabbed a knife from a kitchen drawer, and that when the defendant got back from the store and was confronted by her mother she admitted the baby “was dead” and that “she killed it.”

After Chloe Coplen-Anderson was arrested, prosecutors moved to charge her as an adult in the case, News Channel Nebraska reported. Now that she has been adjudged guilty as an adult, she faces at least 20 years in state prison and technically as long as life imprisonment, though prosecutors are not seeking the max punishment, as a copy of the plea agreement obtained by Law&Crime shows.

Coplen-Anderson is expected to appear in court next on Oct. 15, likely to set a sentencing date, the Star-Herald said.

Law&Crime reached out to a defense attorney for Coplen-Anderson about the development, but she declined to comment at this time.

Carly Gregg Guilty Of Mothers Murder

carly gregg

Carly Gregg is a teen killer from Mississippi who would murder her mother Ashley Smylie and attempted to murder her stepfather Heath Smylie.

According to court documents Carly Gregg would fatally shoot her mother Ashley Smylie. The teen killer would then call a friend to come over and view the dead body

When the friend was standing outside of the home she would hear several gunshots as Carly Gregg attempted to murder her stepfather Heath Smylie. However Smylie would be able to survive the attack and called 911 who would arrest the fourteen year old girl a short distance away

Carly Gregg would be arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder

Prosecutors would offer the teen killer a forty year prison sentence if she plead guilty to the murder and attempted murder charges however the offer was turned down

Carly Gregg would go to trial in September 2024 and after a four day trial she would be found guilty of murder and attempted murder. When the teen is sentenced she faces life in prison

Carly lawyers attempted to put forward a defense that the teen was responsible for the murder of Ashley Smylie and the attempted murder of Heath Smylie however she was mentally ill at the time. The jurors would quickly dismiss the notion and would find the now fifteen year old guilty

  • Update – Carly Gregg would be sentenced to two life sentences plus an additional 10 years for the tampering with evidence conviction

Carly Gregg Case

Carly Gregg has been found guilty.

She was found guilty on all three counts:

  • First-degree murder
  • Attempted murder
  • Tampering with evidence

This following a dramatic week-long trial revolving around the 15-year-old Gregg, who shot and killed her mother, Ashley Smylie, in March of this year.

Smylie, 40, was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School when she died at the hands of her daughter, Gregg, then 14 years old.

The trial, as Gregg’s defense stated on Monday, was not a “whodunit,” as video played in court proved the shooter to be Carly.

Rather, the trial centered around Gregg’s mental state when the shooting took place.

The State and defense brought many witnesses to the stand during the 5-day trial, including Gregg’s step-father, Heath Smylie, who was also shot by Gregg.

Heath was shot in the shoulder by the .357 Magnum, which he gifted to his then-wife, Ashley Smylie.

Heath maintained his support for Carly throughout the trial, even, at one point, mouthing “I love you” to her.

he strategy of Carly’s attorneys was to prove not guilty by reason of insanity. A psychiatrist brought in by the defense concluded that Carly suffers from bipolar disorder.

The State, however, claimed that Carly did not meet the M’naghten rule – meaning she did not meet the requirements to be deemed criminally insane.

The State’s expert witness, Dr. Jason Pickett, a forensic psychologist, claimed that Carly was not insane when she shot her mother, and was aware of the harm her actions would cause.

Additionally, he stated that Carly had narcistic tendencies, calling her actions “diabolical.”

Carly Gregg News

After prosecutors told Mississippi jurors that Carly Gregg knew right from wrong when, at the age of 14, she shot her mom in the face at home and then lured her stepfather to the residence and shot him in the shoulder, the jury swiftly agreed Friday that the teen, tried as an adult, committed first-degree murder, attempted murder, and evidence tampering.

Gregg, now 15, could face two life sentences behind bars after electing to roll the dice at trial on her insanity defense and turning down the state’s plea offer of a 40-year punishment.

On the afternoon of March 19, Gregg shot Ashley Smylie, a 40-year-old math teacher in Rankin County, multiple times at their Brandon home. The shooting unfolded in Gregg’s bedroom after Smylie discovered boxes of vape pens there, which prosecutors said were telltale signs of the teen’s “secret life.” That life, the state alleged, involved “burner phones,” vapes containing marijuana, and a history of cheating at school and self-harm by cutting herself.

Kitchen video from the crime scene played during the trial showed Gregg hiding a gun behind her back as she walked in front of the camera and towards her bedroom. Moments later, that sounds of three gunshots and Smylie’s screams were heard.

Rather than panicking, Gregg reacted calmly and put into motion her next attack, texting on a phone as she sat on a stool in the kitchen while her two dogs hovered below her.

Prosecutors said Gregg used her mother’s phone to lure stepdad Heath Smylie to the house by texting “When will you be home honey?” and that she later shot him in the shoulder, before the man wrested the gun away from her. Prosecutors further said Gregg texted one of her own friends to come over to the house claiming that there was an “emergency.”

Once the friend arrived, Gregg allegedly asked “if she had ever seen a dead body before” before leading the witness to the victim’s body and saying her stepfather was next.

Gregg’s stepdad took the witness stand and testified about the moment he was ambushed upon arriving home.

“When I opened the door to the kitchen, the gun went off in my face before the door was three or four inches wide open,” Smylie said. “The gun flashed in my face. It went off two more times, but my hand was on the gun after the first shot, and I twisted it from Carly.”

He recalled Gregg looked as if “she had seen a demon or something” that day and maybe didn’t even recognize him.

The defense was clear from the start that it wasn’t disputing that Gregg shot the Smylies. Rather, the defense maintained Gregg was not sane when she did so, emphasizing, for example, that Gregg has heard voices, had started taking the anxiety and depression medication Lexapro, switching from a different medication, just one week before Ashley Smylie’s death.

On Friday, defense attorney Bridget Todd insisted that Gregg “was a kid who was experiencing significant mental health issues” when she killed her mother, issues that “ran in her family that we know are hereditary.”

“This is a kid who was compliant with the medication she was put on, however, that medication without them being able to tell beforehand, caused her symptoms to worsen. And while she was having a state of psychosis in an episode of acute stress on March 19, she lost herself in what was the perfect storm,” Todd said during closing arguments.

The stated countered that Gregg’s tampering with video footage after the fact, her calculated luring of her stepdad into an ambush, and her decision to flee from the scene supported that she had clear “intent to kill,” that she was in control of her actions, and that she knew what she did was wrong.

“We would ask that you go back there and find her guilty of all three because she was not insane at the time that this happened,” prosecutor Michael Smith said. “She knew exactly what she was doing, and she knew the difference between right and wrong.”

Jurors began deliberating before noon on Friday and a verdict was in two hours later.

In stark contrast to how she reacted after the shooting, Carly Gregg appeared to be crying just before Judge Dewey Arthur warned those in attendance in the courtroom against any outbursts upon hearing the outcome.

The courtroom was silent as the judge confirmed she was found guilty of all three charges.

Carly Gregg held her head in her hands and appeared stunned by the quick convictions.

From there, the judge kicked off the sentencing phase. The defense called no witnesses and said it was resting its case as to sentencing.
