Tianna Robinson Case
A woman who faced the death penalty in the strangulation death of her 4-year-old daughter pleaded guilty Thursday, agreeing to a sentence that could keep her in prison for the rest of her life.
Tianna Robinson, 28, pleaded guilty in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court to aggravated murder. As part of the plea agreement, Robinson was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
According to prosecutors, on April 13, 2021, Robinson and her boyfriend left Robinson’s daughter, Nahla, alone at their Springfield Township home while they went shopping. When they returned, they found that Nahla had urinated on herself. Robinson snapped, prosecutors said.
She struck Nahla multiple times and strangled her, prosecutors said. The girl suffered numerous injuries, among them a broken arm and bruising to her lungs, liver, stomach and other internal organs.
Nahla spent nine days on life support before she died.
Prosecutors ultimately charged Robinson with aggravated murder and sought the death penalty. As the case was pending for more than two years, Robinson’s mental competency was a constant question.
Four times in 2021 and 2022, psychologists found Robinson was not competent to stand trial. Psychologists consistently found that she understood the nature of the proceedings, but there were questions about whether she was emotionally stable enough to assist in her own defense.
Robinson has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder that doesn’t involve psychosis, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder.
As she awaited resolution of the case, she was held at Summit Behavioral Healthcare, a psychiatric hospital in Roselawn where she received treatment.
In April 2023, Judge Jody Luebbers found that two years of treatment had been effective and that Robinson was competent to stand trial.
After that decision, Robinson’s attorneys requested evaluations to determine if she could pursue a not guilty by reason of insanity plea, based on her mental state at the time of the act, court records say. It was determined that she could not.
