Michelina Goodwin Case

A Maryland woman has been convicted of murdering and dismembering her boyfriend following an argument at her home.

Authorities say Michelina Desiree Goodwin, 46, of Great Mills shot and killed 50-year-old James Volodimir Nalborczyk in December 2022 then dismembered his body before disposing of it in remote areas of St. Mary’s and Charles Counties.

Nalborczyk’s family first reported him missing before the case developed into a homicide investigation. Goodwin claimed the shooting was accidental and later led investigators to his remains.

“This horrifying crime shocked the community and caused unimaginable pain to the victim’s family,” said State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling in a statement. “Over eight days, the victim’s family and the jury heard the graphic circumstances surrounding the victim’s final moments and gruesome post-mortem mutilation. The Defendant’s gutless decisions deprived the family of a proper burial.”

Goodwin faces a maximum penalty of 61 years in prison. She will remain held without bond pending the sentencing hearing.

Michelina Goodwin Sentencing

State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling announced today that Michelina Desiree Goodwin, 46, of Great Mills, Maryland was sentenced to 61 years in prison, the maximum allowable sentence, for the homicide and dismemberment of a 50-year-old male victim that took place in December 2022.

Following an eight-day jury trial that concluded in March 2024, a St. Mary’s County jury convicted Goodwin of murder in the second-degree, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and the unauthorized disposal of a body.

“The Defendant’s heinous act of shooting the victim in the back pales in comparison to the gruesome details following the murder. After killing the victim, the Defendant dismembered him, and scattered his remains throughout our County and a neighboring county,” said State’s Attorney Sterling. “My hope is that with the outcome of today’s sentencing hearing, the victim’s family can finally find peace, justice, healing, and closure after the horrifying homicide of their beloved family member.”

Senior Assistant State’s Attorneys Donna C. Pettersen and Jeffrey R. Maylor prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of St. Mary’s County.

Sergeant Roger Schwarb of the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and Trooper First Class Evan Ruggles of the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division were the lead investigators.

Stephen Cooke Jr Case

A Baltimore County jury convicted a man on Thursday of plotting to kill his girlfriend in a murder-for-hire case that happened 15 years ago.

Stephen Michael Cooke Jr., 44, was found guilty of first-degree murder, solicitation of murder and conspiracy in the death of his girlfriend Heidi Bernadzikowski in 2000. The 24-year-old’s death remained an unsolved cold case for years.

According to an investigation, Cooke hired Alexander Bennett and Grant Lewis from Denver to kill Bernadzikowski, his girlfriend at the time. Prosecutors say Cooke’s motive was a $700,000 life insurance policy he had taken out on the victim a few months before she was found dead in their Dundalk home.

In 2012 Alexander Bennett was arrested — police found that his DNA matched evidence recovered from under Bernadzikowski’s fingernails.

Then, in March of 2014, Bennett pleaded guilty to first-degree-murder and testified against Lewis. Lewis was subsequently found guilty of first-degree-murder and conspiracy.

Investigators testified that when they arrived on the scene, the victim was neatly placed against the wall, her legs were crossed and her throat was slashed. Detectives described the scene as a house in disarray. The burglar alarm was deactivated and they said there were no signs of forced entry. Court documents state that Cooke changed the locks the day before the murder and left a key for Bennett under the mat. Bennett then let himself in and waited for Bernadzikowski to come home.

Prosecutors will seek a life sentence without the possibility of parole

A Maryland jury convicted a woman this week of killing and dismembering her boyfriend and dumping the remains in various locations.

Michelina Goodwin, 46, of Great Mills, was convicted of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and the unauthorized disposal of a body in the death of 50-year-old James Volodimir Nalborczyk, following an eight-day trial, prosecutors said Thursday.

Nalborczyk’s family first reported him missing on Dec. 21, 2022, saying they last saw him on Dec. 7 of that year, the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s office said.

Weeks later, the case later developed into a homicide investigation and Goodwin was identified as a suspect. While being questioned by investigators in January 2023, she said she and Nalborczyk got into a fight at her home and that she accidentally shot and killed him.

On December 21, 2022, the victim’s family reported Nalborczyk missing and noted their last contact with him was on December 7, 2022. Several weeks later, the case developed into a homicide investigation. Goodwin was identified as the primary suspect.

On January 18, 2023, Goodwin told investigators that during an altercation at her residence, she retrieved a firearm that accidentally discharged and killed the victim, who also resided there. Goodwin admitted she dismembered the victim’s body post-mortem and led investigators to his remains in remote areas of St. Mary’s and Charles Counties.

“This horrifying crime shocked the community and caused unimaginable pain to the victim’s family,” said State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling. “Over eight days, the victim’s family and the jury heard the graphic circumstances surrounding the victim’s final moments and gruesome post-mortem mutilation. 1/19/2024: On December 21, 2022, a report was made to the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack that James Volodimir Nalborczyk, 50 was missing.

The family stated that sometime after last seeing Nalborczyk on December 7, 2022, they spoke to a Michelina Desiree Goodwin, 45, of Great Mills, who was reportedly Nalborczyk’s girlfriend. Goodwin allegedly told the family that she was going to break up with Nalborczyk, and he left town for Virginia in a company work truck. After an extensive investigation, Investigators determined that Nalborczyk was not simply missing, but had been murdered, and Goodwin was identified as the primary suspect in that murder investigation.

On January 18, 2023, Investigators spoke to Goodwin, who stated that on December 11, 2022, she was at her residence on Saint Joseph’s Circle, in Great Mills, with James Nalborczyk and Larry Joseph Murphy, 40, of Great Mills. She said that during an altercation she retrieved a firearm from behind the door of her bedroom and pointed it at Nalborczyk. She said that the gun went off, striking Nalborczyk in the back and killing him. She said she then enlisted the help of Murphy to assist her in disposing of Nalborczyk’s deceased body from her residence which she described to Investigators in detail.

It is believed that the disposal of Nalborczyk’s remains occurred on December 17, 2022, and investigators located portions of Nalborczyk’s remains in the area of Lexington Park Maryland, as well as the area of Nanjemoy.

Goodwin also told Investigators of various ways that Murphy helped her hide and destroy evidence of the murder after it had occurred.

Larry Joseph Murphy was then interviewed by Investigators on 1/18/2023. Murphy stated that he was at his residence on Saint Joseph’s Circle with James Nalborczyk and Michelina Goodwin on December 11, 2022. Murphy stated he was with Goodwin and Nalborczyk before going downstairs for a brief time.

Murphy attempted to enter the area where Goodwin and Nalborczyk were in the house when Goodwin told Murphy to go back downstairs. Murphy stated that he went outside of the house and did not witness Nalborczyk being shot. Murphy also said that he never saw Nalborczyk again, and denied helping Goodwin dispose of Nalborczyk’s remains.

Stephen Jarrod Davis II, Teen Accused Of Killing 5-Year-Old Half Sister, Extradited Back To Maryland

Stephen Davis Case

Cops say that on October 3, 2020, the perp’s family noticed the teenager, then 17, missing along with a vehicle from their driveway, and called police. When authorities arrived they found the girl slain in her bed, according to a court press release.

A Maryland teenager has pleaded guilty to murdering his 5-year-old sister by stabbing her to death in 2020, according to Fox Baltimore.

Police said Stephen Jarrod Davis II fatally stabbed his sister, Anaya Jannah Abdul, on October 3, 2020 and then fled, but was later apprehended in Ohio, Fox Baltimore reported.

Davis, now 19, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in the death of a child under 13 and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle in a Maryland court, the Capital Gazette reported. He was charged with all three crimes but pleaded guilty to the murder charge.

Davis will go to trial in April to see if he was criminally responsible for the crime, which is equivalent to an insanity defense.

“Stephen Davis has admitted his guilt in the murder of Anayah, and has elected a trial on the issue of his criminal responsibility for his actions. The NCR trial will take place on April 10, 2023 and the defendant will have the burden of proof in persuading a judge or a jury that at the time of the murder, due to a mental disorder, he lacked substantial capacity to appreciate the criminality of the conduct or conform his conduct to the requirements of the law,” State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess said in a press release.

Cops say that on October 3, 2020, Davis’ family noticed the teenager, then 17, missing along with a vehicle from their driveway, and called police. When authorities arrived, they found the girl slain in her bed, according to a court press release.

Court documents, obtained by the Capital Gazette, say cops found a note the teenager had left behind, which read that he hated his family and wanted to kill all of them, but believed “one is enough to cause you enough damage.”

Cell phone records were able to trace Davis in Ohio where he was apprehended later that day, cops said.

Stephen Davis News

An Anne Arundel County judge on Friday sentenced 20-year-old Stephen Jarrod Davis II, of Pasadena, to Life in prison, with all but 60 years suspended for the 2020 First-Degree Murder of his 5-year-old half-sister, Anaya Jannah Abdul, State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess announced.

Davis plead guilty to his crimes but pursuant to his Not Criminally Responsible plea, but a jury thereafter determined Davis was criminally responsible for his crimes.

“The defendant took his anger for his family out on the most vulnerable member, his 5-year-old sister, stating that was enough to cause damage,” Leitess said. “Prosecuting a defendant this young for such a violent crime is not easy, but the defendant must be held accountable for his actions.”

During the sentencing hearing, Judge William Mulford said he agreed with the jury’s verdict and that Davis had killed his sister to hurt his family. He agreed the defendant was motivated by hate and anger and that he used his sister to do so. The judge sentenced Davis, who was 17 at the time of the murder, with a recommendation to serve his sentence at the Patuxent Institution in Jessup, which treats youthful offenders.

On the morning of October 3, 2020, Davis’ family noticed the defendant, who was a senior in high school at the time, was missing from their home. Family members called police after noticing a vehicle was also gone. Later, the note written by Davis was found. Shortly after reading the note, and while police

were on scene, a sibling found Anaya in her bed suffering from stab wounds to her neck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police traced Stephen Davis’ cellphone to Ohio, where state troopers spotted him and attempted to pull him over. Davis attempted to elude police, taking them on a high speed chase for more than five miles with Davis driving over 130 mph. Ultimately, Davis pulled over and was taken into custody. Witnesses testified at trial that he acted normally and followed all instructions.

In October 2022, Stephen Davis entered a guilty plea to First-Degree Murder and opted for a bi-furcated trial on the issue of criminal responsibility, where he had the burden of proof to persuade a jury by a preponderance of the evidence that at the time of the act, and because of a mental disorder, he either couldn’t conform his behavior to the law or couldn’t appreciate the criminality of his actions.

Expert witnesses called by the State and Defense agreed that Davis suffered from some mental health disorders, but disagreed whether they were sufficient to render him Not Criminally Responsible. A jury found Davis had failed to prove he was Not Criminally Responsible.

Assistant State’s Attorney Anastasia Prigge and Assistant State’s Attorney David Russell prosecuted the case on the behalf of the citizens of Anne Arundel County, with the Honorable William Mulford presiding.

Dawnta Harris Sentenced To Life In Prison In Baltimore County Ofc. Amy Caprio's Death

Dawnta Harris Case

The Maryland Court of Appeals has upheld a felony murder conviction and sentence of life in prison for the teen who fatally struck Baltimore County Police Officer Amy Caprio with a vehicle in 2018, despite arguments from his attorneys that the court did not properly consider his age.

Dawnta Harris, now 20 years old, was behind the wheel of a stolen Jeep in Perry Hall when Caprio blocked its path with her patrol car, jumped out and issued orders for him to stop. He initially did, opening his car door, then he ducked down and accelerated, police said. She fired her weapon once before he struck her.

Harris, with three other Baltimore teens, were in the area burglarizing homes, which allowed the prosecution to seek a felony murder charge — a doctrine that can apply when someone is killed during the course of a different felony.

A jury found Harris guilty of the offense after an eight-day trial in 2019 and he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Attorneys for his appeal requested the conviction and sentence be reviewed, arguing felony murder shouldn’t apply and it was unconstitutional to give a minor a life sentence. Harris was 16 at the time of Caprio’s killing.

But the Court of Appeals rejected those arguments in a ruling Wednesday.

Dawnta Harris News

Dawnta Harris, the teen who accused of burglarizing homes and running over Baltimore County Police Officer Amy Caprio with a stolen Jeep last May, was found guilty of felony murder, burglary and theft.

Harris faced five charges in total. Here’s the verdict on each count:

felony murder (guilty)
first-degree burglary (guilty on one count, not guilty on the second count)
fourth-degree burglary (not guilty)
theft (guilty)

When the verdict was read in the courtroom, one member of Harris’ family screamed and ran out of the courtroom crying. Harris put his head in his hands and then put his head down on the table and was heard audibly crying.

“He’s not in good shape, he’s not in good shape,” said Warren Brown, one of Harris’ attorneys, “He’s been in a whirlwind this whole time. But, he’ll have to deal with it.”

Brown said there are no winners in this case and that Harris was remorseful and was “not doing well.”

“For those who want to rejoice on either side,” Brown said, “there are no winners, just losers here.”

“Nothing this court can do can bring Officer Caprio back,” he said.

The teen’s other attorney J. Wyndal Gordon thanked the judge and jury for their fair trial.

“I told you in the very beginning we were going to do our best, we were going to fight and that’s what we did we fought,” said Gordon, ” and because of us fighting it wasn’t a clean slate. He was found not guilty of some of the charges.”

The attorneys said they will file motions for a new trial and an appeal after the sentencing.

The prosecutor also thanked the jury for paying attention to the case and parsing out the evidence that allowed them to get to the verdict.

“We thought the jurors came to a very reasonable conclusion,” the prosecutor said. “It was the one the evidence demanded.”

Caprio’s family held long hugs outside of the Baltimore County Courthouse moments after learning the West Baltimore teenager who ran her over, was found responsible for her death.

Caprio’s parents spoke to the media after the trial and thanked the jury, but said they will continue to live with the pain of her death every day.

“We wouldn’t have been able to get through this without people’s love and compassion,” Debbie Byus Sorrells, Caprio’s mother, said after the verdict.

“Honestly this sort of thing isn’t a closure, it’s a continuation,” said Caprio’s father Gary Sorrells. “We will live with this traumatic event in our lives. We wake up in the morning, we live it every day, and it’s not something that’s going to go away.”

Tim, Amy’s husband, left after the verdict and didn’t speak to the media.

“My heartfelt condolences and prayers remain with Officer Amy Caprio’s family. The past couple of weeks have undoubtedly been difficult for Amy’s family, friends, and co-workers at the Baltimore County Police Department,’ said county executive Johnny Olszewski. “I thank the jurors who listened to the testimony, examined the evidence, and rendered their verdict. While this does not bring back Officer Caprio, justice has been delivered.”

“I want to again thank Officer Caprio for her commitment to the people of Baltimore County and I want to thank her family for sharing her with us. I pray daily for the safety of our men and women in law enforcement,” Olszewski added.
