Cleotha Abston is a killer from Tennessee who would be convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Eliza Fletcher

According to court documents Eliza Fletcher was taking her morning run when she would be kidnapped by Cleotha Abston. The woman would be forced into a SUV and would later be fatally shot.

A year before the murder Cleotha Abston would sexually assault another woman at gunpoint and would ultimately be sentenced to eighty years in prison for that brutal crime. A delay in the testing of a sexual assault case would allow Cleotha to remain on the streets. Due to this the Tennessee Government would pass a law to expedite the testing of sexual assault kits

For the murder of Eliza Fletch Cleotha Abston would plead guilty, to avoid the death penalty, and would be sentenced to life in prison without parole

Cleotha Abston Case

A Tennessee man pleaded guilty Monday to kidnapping a Memphis school teacher while she was on an early morning run and then killing her.

Cleotha Abston entered guilty pleas to first-degree murder and especially aggravated kidnapping in the abduction and death of Eliza Fletcher.

Abston, 40, had been set to stand trial in February. Prosecutors had said they would seek the death penalty if Abston were convicted of first-degree murder. Instead, Judge Lee Coffee sentenced Abston to life in prison without parole after he entered the guilty pleas.

Fletcher was grabbed from a street while she was jogging before dawn near the University of Memphis on Sept. 2, 2022, and forced into an SUV. Her body was found days later near a vacant duplex

The killing of Fletcher, a 34-year-old kindergarten teacher and mother of two, shocked the Memphis community and led to a flood of support for her family. Runners in Memphis and several other cities held early morning running events in her honor a week after she was abducted, a tradition that has continued in the city on the anniversary of her kidnapping

In a statement, Fletcher’s family said they “miss the bright light of Liza’s life every day.”

“Liza meant so much to so many, and her smile radiated happiness, energy, and comfort,” her family said. “Her husband, her children, her parents, her brother, the rest of her family, her friends, her students, her school families, her fellow teachers, her church community, and so many others were moved by countless examples of her faith, kindness, and compassion.”

Abston, who also has gone by the name Cleotha Henderson, was arrested after police detected his DNA on sandals found near the location where Fletcher was last seen. An autopsy report showed Fletcher died of a gunshot wound to the head.

“We had been meeting with him regularly for the past few months and had been telling him that we need to settle this case, that we cannot go forward with a trial and expect to succeed,” said Juni Ganguli, Abston’s lawyer.

Abston was sentenced to 80 years in prison May 17 for raping a woman a year before he was charged in Fletcher’s death. He was convicted in April of raping the woman while holding her at gunpoint in September 2021.

Abston, whose history of criminal charges dates back to the 1990s when he was a juvenile, was not charged in the 2021 rape case until after being charged a year later with killing Fletcher because of a long delay in processing the sexual assault kit. After Fletcher’s death, the Legislature passed a law requiring the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to issue a quarterly report on sexual assault kit testing times.

Jacob Carney Murders Grandmother

Jacob Carney is a teen killer from Tennessee who would plead guilty to the murder of his Grandmother

According to court documents seventeen year old Jacob Carney would dress up all in black including a face mask and would attack his Grandmother’s fiance. When the Grandmother, Mary Carney, attempted to intervene she would be stabbed more than a hundred times leading to her death

At the time of the murder Mary Carney was going through the process of legally adopting Jacob Carney

Jacob Carney would be arrested and ultimately plead guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a possibility of parole

Jacob Carney Case

Charged when he was only 17, now 21-year-old Jacob Lee Carney has pleaded guilty to the 2020 murder of his grandmother, who was found stabbed 114 times.

In May 2020, police responded to the home of 67-year-old Mary Carney on Ellsworth Drive. Inside, police found two victims who had sustained multiple stab wounds. The other family member survived, but Mary died from her injuries.

On March 1, Jacob Carney pleaded guilty before Judge William Goodman III to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Stabbed 114 times

At around 1 a.m. on May 11, 2020, James Wilyard, the fiancé of Mary Carney, was sitting in the living room watching TV when he heard a noise from the kitchen, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Pugh. Wilyard, who was recovering from a recent heart surgery, got up to investigate, believing that Mary and her grandson, Jacob, were in their rooms asleep.

“There were no lights on in the house,” Pugh told Clarksville Now. “Normally, he (Wilyard) could hear music coming out of Jacob’s room, but he didn’t hear any music.”

It was silent as Wilyard entered the kitchen, and nothing seemed out of place. He called out for Jacob, but there was no response. Just as he called Jacob’s name a second time, a light flicked on, revealing the teen standing nearby wearing an all-black outfit, a mask, gloves and, according to Pugh, holding what Wilyard called “the biggest knife in the kitchen.”

As Wilyard tried to get the knife from the 17-year-old, they fell to the ground, and Jacob stabbed him in the back.

The commotion woke up Mary, who rushed out to see Jacob attacking Wilyard. She raced over but she slipped in the blood and fell. In the fight, she managed to grab Jacob’s wrist and told Wilyard to call 911. Wilyard got away, ran to the bedroom, locked the door and called 911 while Jacob beat on the door, trying to break in.

When police arrived, they kicked down the front door to get inside. They found Mary Carney on the floor, deceased, and Wilyard in the bedroom with stab wounds to his back, legs, arms, neck, and sides of his head. Jacob was lying in his bedroom, his clothes covered in blood.

Later, an autopsy report would state that Mary Carney had 114 stab and incision wounds.
Maternal grandmother, adoption pending

Mary Carney was the maternal grandparent of the defendant and, according to Pugh, was in the process of adopting him. According to her obituary, she was born on Oct. 8, 1952 and is survived by her longtime partner, Wilyard, and three adult children.

At the time of his arrest, since he was a juvenile, the domestic relationship between Carney and the victims was not released, and court paperwork was not originally available due to this initially being a juvenile case.

As for the motive in the case, “we don’t know why,” Pugh told Clarksville Now. “He never did say why he did it.”

Jacob Carney pleaded guilty in exchange for life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder of his grandmother, plus 15 years for the attempted murder of Wilyard to be served concurrently.

According to court documents fifteen year old Trameisha Farris and sixteen year old Wilton Alexander would go to the home of fifteen year old Edgar “EJ” Utley. Trameisha Farris would lure EJ outside when he would be fatally shot by Wilton Alexander. Police believe the motive was robbery

Trameisha Farris and Wilton Alexander would be arrested, convicted and sentenced to life in prison

Trameisha Farris Case

The two teenagers accused of killing a 15-year-old from Antioch have been found guilty of first-degree murder, according to District Attorney Glenn Funk.

E.J. Utley was a freshman at Hillsboro High School when he was murdered on his front porch by two teens, 16-year-old Wilton Alexander and 15-year-old Trameisha Farris.

“E.J. Utley was 15 at the time he was killed and a freshman at Hillsboro High School. According to police and court testimony, E.J. was killed on his father’s front porch by then 16-year-old Wilton Alexander after being lured out of the home by Wilton’s girlfriend, Trameisha Farris, who was 15 at the time,” the DA said.

The DA added that Utley and Alexander had been close friends, even playing basketball together growing up.

“Their mothers were also close friends, and were both in court for the trial. A unique aspect during the trial came when Detective Chad High (a Metro Police Department expert) testified that the defense attorney’s late disclosed exhibits were potentially doctored and unreliable,” the DA said.

Trameisha Farris More News

Around the clock investigation by Homicide Unit and TITANS (The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings) detectives has led to the identification of Wilton Alexander, 16, and Trameisha Farris, 15, as suspects in Thursday afternoon’s murder of Edgar Utley V, 15, on the front porch of his Pointer Court home. Juvenile Court arrest orders charging Alexander and Farris with criminal homicide have been issued. The two are believed to be together. Anyone seeing them or knowing their whereabouts is asked to immediately contact Nashville Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.

The investigation, being led by Detective Chris Cote, shows that Utley was visited by a female (alleged to have been Farris) for about 10 minutes before the two walked onto the front porch where a gunman (alleged to have been Alexander) was waiting. A struggle ensued, during which Utley was fatally shot. He died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt. The male and female involved fled.

At this point in the investigation, robbery appears to have been the motive.

Gregory Scott Hale Case

The victim killed in a bizarre murder and cannibalism case has been identified.

Police called it one of the most gruesome murder scenes they’ve ever seen. Gregory Scott Hale, age 37, has been accused of killing a woman he met from Bledsoe County.

The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Lisa Marie Hyder. She’d been staying with some friends near Manchester.

The incident happened at 750 Pete Sain Road, which is east of Manchester. Investigators said Hale lived with his parents, but most of the evidence was collected in the garage or behind the home.

Authorities said Hale confessed to murdering Hyder on Friday. He apparently picked her up in town and brought her back to his house — the same day he met her.

According to investigators, Hale told them he dismembered her body and even ate part of it.

In his little neighborhood, no one can stop talking about the murder.

“I’m just at a loss for words. I don’t know what to think that this kid I’ve known for 28 years could do something this gruesome,” said one neighbor who didn’t wish to be identified.

She said Hale had dinner over the weekend with one of her friends.

“She told me he sat at their kitchen table Saturday night and ate supper with them like nothing was wrong,” she said.

Something was wrong.

Investigators said after Hale dismembered the body, he tried to find someone to help with the disposal. That person called authorities.

“You know I knew he wasn’t right, but I never thought he’d do something like that, and they got to talking about he was in to Satanism and stuff like that and he’d posted on Facebook,” another neighbor said.

Hale has posted several photographs of himself on Facebook wearing black and carrying big knives.

Hyder’s body has been sent to Nashville for an autopsy. Hale has been held on a $1.5 million bond.

He was arraigned on Monday and was appointed an attorney.

Gregory Scott Hale News

A Tennessee man who told police he ate part of his victim’s body has been sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty in the woman’s death.

Coffee Circuit Judge Craig Johnson sentenced 37-year-old Gregory Scott Hale of Summitville on Thursday. The Tullahoma News (http://bit.ly/1BxTPqg ) said Hale pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the June 8 death of 36-year-old Lisa Marie Hyder.

Prosecutors say Hale picked Hyder up at a liquor store and took her to his residence, killing her after sex. They say he told investigators that he was fulfilling an obsession.

Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott said officers discovered a burned torso with hands, feet and head cut off and found in buckets.

Hale’s attorney, Kevin Askren, didn’t immediately return a call.
