Jeffery Motley Case

A convicted killer who said his execution would punish his family more than him was put to death early today.

Jeffrey Dean Motley was pronounced dead eight minutes after a lethal combination of drugs was injected into his arm.

He was convicted of killing Maria Adilia Duran, who was last seen alive on July 22, 1984, when she left her apartment in the Houston area to swim with a friend.

Her body was found in a field 10 days later. Mr. Motley, who was on parole after serving 11 months of a 5-year term for burglary, was captured while driving Ms. Duran’s car.

Witnesses said he also had jewelry that belonged to her, and a bank videotape showed him with Ms. Duran when she withdrew $300 from an automated teller machine. Her identification, credit cards and checkbook were found in a trash bin at an apartment complex where Mr. Motley was living.

When he was arrested, Mr. Motley denied shooting Ms. Duran, even though it was not then certain that she was dead because her body had not been found.

In a prison interview before his execution, Mr. Motley,29, said that “to say I’m getting punished is imbecilic.”

He added: “Once I get dead, I’m not going to worry about it. My friends, family, relatives — they’ve got to live with it.”

In his final statement, Jeffery Motley turned toward his mother, Joanne, and said, “I love you, Mom. Goodbye.”

Then he cried and repeated, “Goodbye, Mom.”

Mrs. Motley sobbed quietly in the death chamber, then broke into loud cries outside
