Koalten Orr Case

A 16-year-old Oklahoma boy has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his father’s fiance and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Koalten Glenn Orr, who was charged and convicted as an adult, was sentenced to life with the chance for parole, with all but the first 25 years suspended, after entering the plea Friday in Craig County District Court in Vinita.

Under the law, a teenager is tried as an adult if charged with first-degree murder.

Orr was 14 when he was charged in the August 2016 shooting death of 38-year-old Laura Hendrix at their home in Vinita.

After shooting Hendrix, Orr walked into the police station and confessed to police that he gunned down his stepmother.

He apologized to Hendrix’s family “for everything” following the sentencing.

Orr initially said he shot Hendrix because she was abusing him, but prosecutors say evidence proves that claim was false.

Koalten Orr News

Koalten Glenn Orr, 15, pleaded guilty for shooting and killing his father’s fiancée Laura Hendrix in their Vinita home on August 22, 2016.

A Craig County judge sentenced Orr to life in prison with all but the first 25-years suspended. He was charged and adjudicated as an adult; by law, a teenager is tried as an adult if charged with first-degree murder.

Orr will be about 40-years-old before he’s eligible for parole.

Following the murder, Orr who was 14 at the time, went to the Vinita Police Department where he told an officer he needed a hug, then stated he just shot his stepmother. He originally claimed that Hendrix had abused him; however, investigators found this to be false.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Tony Evans said, “Evidence provided Hendrix didn’t abuse Orr. Both through the police investigation and Orr’s own statements.”

The victim’s father gave a victim impact statement during the sentencing which concluded with him saying, “For 38-years, she was my best friend and right hand. In a second, that’s all gone. I can only hope that when you’re lying there at night that you come to realize what you have done. Taken so much from so many. Even your own dad.”

Following sentencing, Orr asked permission to turn around and address Laura’s family to apologize “for everything.”
