Rogelio Cannady Case

A man who killed his cellmate while serving two life sentences for a double murder became the 10th person executed in Texas this year.

Rogelio Cannady, 37, died by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Wednesday, the Huntsville Item reported. He was executed half an hour after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his final appeal and two decades after his first two killings.

Cannady received life sentences for killing two runaways, Ricardo Garcia, 16, and Ana Robles, 13, in 1990. Robles was also raped.

In 1993, corrections officers found Leovigildo Bonal, 55, dead in the cell he shared with Cannady at the state prison in Beeville. Cannady told investigators the older man tried to sexually assault him.

Two of Garcia’s brothers and Cannady’s brother and niece witnessed his death.

“I am going to be OK. I know where I’ll be,” he said. “I love you … May God have mercy on my soul.”
