Je’Michael Malloy Case

After spending the summer with her grandparents and extended family in Hope Mills, North Carolina, 15-year-old Danielle Locklear decided to stay there instead of going to her mother’s home in Myrtle Beach.

Danielle looked forward to making new friends at school and spending time with her boyfriend, Je’Michael Malloy, then 17, a high school senior in nearby Fayetteville. The two had began dating in June 2013, cbsnews.com reported.

On March 11, 2014,, while her grandmother was away Danielle told her grandfather she had to go to her friend Alexis’ house for a quick errand around 9:45 p.m.

Danielle never returned. Authorities responded to a call reporting Danielle missing the next day, according to “Final Moments,” airing Sundays at 7/6c on Oxygen.

Officers canvassed a nearby creek area, which teens used as a gathering place. They did not find Danielle, but they discovered a sock that belonged to her. Authorities questioned whether Danielle had gone to the creek, not the friend’s house the night she vanished.

“Alexis told investigators Danielle had not come to her house during the nighttime hours,” said Joshua Hamilton, a detective with Hope Mills PD.

However, Alexis had hung out with Danielle earlier that same day at the creek. Alexis provided photos of Danielle taken hours before she went missing. In the pictures the reflection in Danielle’s eyeglasses revealed others who were present that afternoon.

Caroline Nuzzo, the missing teen’s friend, was one of them. She said Danielle told her a couple days earlier that Malloy had broken up with her.

Police considered the possibility Danielle went to see Malloy, not Alexis, the night she disappeared. When questioned, Malloy said that Danielle was having such a hard time with the breakup that he blocked her from his phone, according to investigative journalist Ana Garcia. He claimed he hadn’t talked to her in days.

Detectives asked Malloy where he was on the night Danielle went missing. He said he was home with his friend Dominic Lock, then 18. Malloy willingly gave his phone to detectives for forensic analysis.

Investigators were shocked to find texts in which Danielle told Malloy that she was pregnant with his baby.

Police also learned from Malloy’s phone that he was texting with other girls the night Danielle went missing. It appeared that he had been home that night as he had previously said.

To unearth fresh clues detectives reviewed surveillance footage from a camera near the creek and subpoenaed Danielle’s cell phone records. They retraced her steps the day she disappeared using the digital data.

Danielle’s last phone ping was to a cell tower at 10:40 p.m. They combed the area for the phone without success.

After the FBI got involved in the search for Danielle, images of her were released to the media to help spark leads. Danielle’s disappearance became national news. Danielle’s mother, aunts, and other family members searched on their own and made flyers. Malloy joined the efforts.

Then, on April 2, just over three weeks after Danielle’s disappearance, an off-duty officer spied a partially-submerged body in a river about 20 miles outside of Hope Mills.

When the body was pulled from the water, investigators saw that cinder blocks had been tied to her waist and feet with yellow rope to weigh it down. The victim was identified as Danielle.

As her family mourned, police learned that a sock matching the one found at the creek had been stuffed into her mouth.

The medical examiner concluded that Danielle died of asphyxiation but couldn’t determine whether the actual mechanism for death was strangulation or the sock, according to Hamilton.

“The only thing they could say was it was from both,” he said.

The autopsy also revealed that Danielle was not pregnant at the time of her death.

The location where Danielle’s body was recovered was less than a mile from Malloy’s residence. The victim’s ex-boyfriend became the focus of the homicide case. Police executed a search of the Malloy residence, where they found cinder blocks and cord matching the kind used to weigh down the victim’s body.

“The cops think this is the aha moment, but Je’Michael doesn’t crack,” said Garcia. “He doesn’t confess.”

Lock was brought in for questioning but he refused to speak with police.

But four days after his initial denial, Malloy confessed. He said that he and Lock picked up Danielle on the night she went missing. During an argument with her at the creek, Malloy said he snapped and killed Danielle.

He asked Lock, who was waiting in the car, to help him move the body. In a taped interview with police Malloy told police that Lock shoved the sock into her mouth “because she was making a noise.”

Police learned that Malloy used a phone app to send texts to make it appear as if he was home at the time of the slaying.

Malloy was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Lock was initially charged with conspiracy, but a day later faced second-degree murder charges along with Malloy, reported abc7.com.

In May 2016, Malloy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 25 to 31 years in prison. Lock pleaded guilty to the charge of being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and was sentenced to serve six to eight years in prison in June 2016.

Khrystina Rice would be convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole

Khrystina Rice Case

A Union County jury sentenced a 30-year-old woman who committed infanticide to life without parole on Tuesday.

The jury found Indian Land resident Khrystina Marie Rice guilty of first-degree murder and felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

Court documents say Rice secretly gave birth to a healthy baby boy in the main bathroom of her residence in October 2019. Rice then inflicted several injuries upon the baby, including a skull fracture, severe facial contusions, and numerous rib fractures.

Rice attempted to conceal the dead baby in a heavy fleece blanket, completely covering his nose and mouth, then put him in a trash bag she cinched up and hid in an adjoining closet.

The baby was later found by responding paramedics when Rice passed out, and her husband, unaware that Rice had delivered a baby, called 911 for help. When questioned by paramedics at the scene, Rice denied giving birth to the baby.

The child’s cause of death was hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy due to suffocation.

“We thank the jurors for delivering some measure of justice for this innocent child’s death,” District Attorney Trey Robison said. “This was an extremely emotional case for Mr. Rice, who lost his child, and every prosecutor and investigator that worked to hold Khrystina Rice accountable for her horrible crimes.”

Union County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation.

In a Facebook post after the sentencing, Sheriff Eddie Cathey commended the investigative efforts of the UCSO deputies and detectives who worked the initial response and the extensive investigation of this homicide. Cathey also thanked the Union County District Attorney’s Office for their preparation, planning, and prosecutorial efforts in this case.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family of the innocent victim in this case who continue to mourn this tragic, unnecessary loss,” Cathey said in a statement.

Arnav Uppalapati Case

Arnav Uppalapati, 19, was once a promising student headed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He will spend the next 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his mother during argument in December 2015 in their Cary home.

She may have pushed him or slapped him, and he choked her,” prosecutor Howard Cummings said.

Attorneys said Nalini Tellaprolu was hard on her son.

“Verbal and physical abuse, for a lack of a better word, from my client’s mother, the evidence would show, had been going on for some time before that,” defense attorney Ryan Willis said.

Investigators ruled that Tellaprolu had been strangled inside the home. They never publicly disclosed a motive for the killing.

Cummings said Uppalapati dragged his mother’s body into the garage, where he put a bag over her face.

“He did not want to carry her out to the car and have to see her face,” Cummings said. “After all, it was his mother.”

The DNA from the bag was the evidence that tied him to the crime. He confessed.

“I believe, sometimes, when you snap, it’s because you’re all bottled up, and things have been going on for a while,” Cummings said.

Uppalapati’s father and sister sat behind him in the courtroom.

Cummings discussed the plea deal with the family.

“I want them to know when they walk away that someone is still thinking about them, and someone in the system still cares about them,” Cummings said.

Cummings said Uppalapati’s age, immaturity and his confession early in the investigation led to the plea deal.

David Vaughn Case

A Cruso teenager is currently sitting in the Haywood County Detention Center with a second-degree murder charge after failing to make a compelling case of self defense.

David Vaughn, 19, was charged with the murder of Brandon Gibson, 45, back in January 2022, when a deep snow had blanketed Haywood County — an element of the case that would later prove critical in the detective work.

The two men had apparently been in a physical altercation earlier in the day over $40 Vaughn owed Gibson for pot, according to a statement Vaughn gave authorities.

Deputies from the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a Cruso home shortly before midnight on Jan. 16, 2022. The caller stated that his grandson had shot Gibson while Gibson was trying to break into their house, according to court files. Sgt. Ryan Smith, Cpl. Morgan Deaver and Deputy Mark Mease responded to the scene.

When they arrived, the caller directed them down steps leading to the basement, which was used as an apartment. Gibson’s body laid in front of the door with multiple gunshot wounds to his head, including the front, back and top of his head, according to court files.

The caller also handed Smith a .22 long revolver rifle, which he said was the gun used in the shooting. He added that the gun was Vaughn’s and that he used it to shoot rats, according to court files.

Deaver unloaded the firearm, which was fully loaded with nine rounds, six of which were spent.

The caller stated that Gibson had come through the door “yelling and screaming,” and Vaughn shot him. Vaughn said he was sleeping in a chair when Gibson “broke in and came at him,” according to court documents.

During a later interview with authorities, Vaughn reiterated the story that he had shot Gibson during a break-in. He also stated that the two had gotten into a fight earlier in the day over Vaughn owing Gibson $40 for marijuana.

Vaughn said that during the fight, Gibson had been “getting angry and cursing everyone” before being told to leave. He said that Gibson left and “then came back in, busting in through the door and that’s when he shot him,” according to court documents.

Vaughn also said that after he shot Gibson, he kicked him to make sure he was dead.

Detective Dustin Toon, who conducted the interview, observed injuries to Vaughn’s hands. Vaughn explained he had “purposefully struck trees earlier in the day with his fists because he was angry,” according to court files.

On the night of the shooting, there was “at least a foot of snow outside.” However, Smith noted in the case file that Gibson’s shoes and pant legs were not wet, which seemed to contradict the story of Gibson breaking in.

As part of the investigation, detectives spoke to a woman who was in jail at the time on an unrelated incident. She said that she had spoken to Gibson just three weeks prior, and Gibson told her he was staying at the residence where he was shot.

In July 2022, prosecutors filed a request for safekeeping transfer to another detention center, as “the defendant exhibits violently aggressive behavior that cannot be contained and warrants a higher level of supervision” than the Haywood County jail could provide.

Vaughn is being held on a bond of $502,000. The $500,000 comes from this case, while the $2,000 comes from an unrelated theft charge.
