A man who beat a woman to death 20 years ago and confessed to three other murders was executed by injection Thursday night.
Danny Lee Barber, 43, came within an hour of being executed Dec. 9, when a federal judge issued a stay after Barber’s lawyers raised questions about Texas’ clemency procedures. The judge later upheld the procedures.
Barber was sentenced for the 1979 attack on Janice Louise Ingram, 50, in her Dallas area home. Barber described the killing as a burglary that went wrong and blamed it on alcoholism and depression. He also confessed to three other murders in Dallas County between 1977 and 1979, earning him life sentences for each.

Texas death row inmate Danny Lee Barber has temporarily avoided his date with the executioner, thanks to a federal judge’s stay that arose out of a separate case. Prison officials say another execution date will be set for Barber, who was sentenced to die today for the 1979 beating death of a Dallas- area woman.
The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans late today declined to lift a stay issued earlier by U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks of Austin. Sparks, ruling in a civil suit brought by death row inmate Joseph Stanley Faulder, agreed that Texas clemency procedures denied condemned killers due process of law. The clemency requests of both Barber and Faulder were denied early today by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.
The 43-year-old Barber, a former handyman, would have been the third Texas inmate to be executed in as many days. He was sentenced to death for the Oct. 8, 1979, pipe beating of 51-year-old Janie Ingram. Barber later confessed that he had ‘gone bananas’ when Ingram surprised him in her Balch Springs home. Ingram’s body was found the next day by her mother and brother who had been unable to get her to answer the phone. Ingram’s 92-year-old mother, Ruth Clowers, was set to witness Barber’s execution. She told the Dallas Morning News: ‘I was so crazy that they were going to turn him loose or keep him down there until I was gone. I wanted to see him gone before I passed.’ Barber later confessed to three other killings in the Dallas area and received life sentences in those cases
