Kenneth Harris Case

Texas prison officials have carried out their 18th execution of the year, putting Kenneth Bernard Harris to death by injection for the 1982 rape and murder of a Houston woman. Officials are preparing for a double execution Wednesday that will equal a state record for most executions in a single year set in 1935.

The state will almost certainly top that mark, as seven more executions are scheduled this month. Harris was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m. after a lengthy statement in which he apologized for the pain he had caused to both his and his victim’s family.

A former computer store clerk, Harris was condemned for the June 7, 1986, rape and murder of 28-year-old Lisa Stonestreet, his next-door neighbor. She was found strangled and drowned in her bathtub. Stonestreet’s sister and brother-in-law attended the execution. Don Haack later read a statement in which he said his family’s loss could ‘not be calculated, and he expressed sympathy for Harris’ family. Haack said his family had forgiven Harris, even writing him before his death to tell him. Haack said, ‘As a family, the most important concept that we want to convey is that God sovereignty forgives us. Therefore, we are able to forgive Kenneth Harris, even with something as devastating as the murder of our loved one.’

The 34-year-old Harris is the 125th killer put to death by the state since it resumed executions in December 1982. The state’s record for most executions in a single year in the modern era is 19 in 1995. Texas executed 20 prisoners in 1935
