Noble Mays Case
After 15 years on the Texas death row, a former oil field roughneck was been executed by lethal injection early Thursday. Noble Mays, 41, was convicted of murdering a Wichita Falls man during a robbery in 1979.
The victim, Jerry Lamb, was stabbed three times with a knife after being chased from his car, according to prison records. Mays and a co-defendant, James Thomas Moore, 40, were convicted in the murder case. Moore received a 45-year prison sentence.
Asked whether he had a final statement before the execution, Mays shook his head and grunted. After the chemicals were injected, Mays took three deep breaths, gasped and fell still. He was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. (2:42 EDT). Mays’ 15 years in the Texas unit included a rare death-row escape attempt. In April 1989, Mays and another convicted killer, James Paster, were caught in a pipe corridor. Paster was executed in September 1989
