Pete Russell Case
Jurors have decided that a man who viciously killed his police informant girlfriend because her tip led to his arrest on a drug charge should die for his crime.
The jury last week convicted Pete Russell Jr. of capital murder. Jurors deliberated about four hours Monday before deciding that Russell, 29, was a future threat and there were no mitigating circumstances to spare his life.
Russell, enraged by the betrayal that had led to his arrest, posted bail and stabbed, slashed and stomped Tanjala Brewer, 40, to death in her home on Aug. 13, 2001.
Testimony showed that after placing candles around her body, Russell used her blood to scrawl “She is the devil. I am God” across her double-door bedroom closet.
“This is a shocking crime,” prosecutor Terrance Windham told jurors in state District Judge Mike Anderson’s court. “It deserves a shocking punishment.
Co-prosecutor Renee Magee told jurors that Russell deliberately and brutally killed Brewer, wounding her 23 times as he chased her around her home.
She said Russell had spent eight years in prison for trying to kill a man and threatening another when awaiting trial on the original charge.
