A 41-year-old former parolee was executed Wednesday for killing his ex-wife and her 10-year-old son a decade ago in Port Arthur, Texas.
Windell Broussard was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. after receiving a lethal injection at the Walls State Prison. He was sentenced to death for the murders of Dianna Broussard, 28, and her son, Corey, at their home on April 24, 1992.
In his final statement, Broussard called his execution and the two deaths a tragedy.
“I just want to let everyone know that this here is a tragedy,” he said. “What happened to Dianna, Corey, and what is happening to me … it is a tragedy. That is all, warden.”
Broussard always maintained he was innocent.
Broussard’s lawyer had made a last ditch appeal for DNA testing that he said would prove his client’s innocence but it was turned down by appeals courts. Prosecutors contended DNA testing was a waste of time because Broussard’s own stepdaughter had witnessed the crime.
Tocarra Harris, his 9-year-old stepdaughter, had testified that she awoke to screaming in their Port Arthur home. She said her mother and Corey were being stabbed by Broussard and then he turned on her, but she survived to testify against him.
Dianna Broussard’s mother testified that her daughter had left Windell Broussard because he beat her. Her uncle, Elton Harris, also told the jury that a week before the killing he had heard Broussard threatened to kill his niece.
Broussard was the third convicted killer executed this year in Texas. Another death row inmate, Randall Hafdahl, is scheduled to receive a lethal injection Thursday.
