Ricky Blackmon Case

Texas death row inmate Ricky Don Blackmon has been executed for killing an east Texas man with a homemade sword during a robbery.

Blackmon, who had no final statement, was declared dead at 6:22 p.m. CDT today after receiving a lethal injection at the state prison in Huntsville for the March 28, 1987, stabbing death of Carl J. Rinkle in his home in Joaquin, about 175 miles southeast of Dallas. Rinkle’s mother, Thomasine Crow, witnessed the execution at Blackmon’s request. The two had previously met for about six hours as part of a reconciliation process. Just a few hours before the execution, Crow said of Blackmon: ‘The process told me he is hurting. I learned he loved his mother very much. He admitted to me that he deserved to die and that he is looking forward to dying.’

According to the evidence, Blackmon and his girlfriend, Donna Mae Rogers, drove to Joaquin from their home outside Dallas because she knew people there ‘who would be good targets for a robbery.’ Prosecutors said they found Rinkle at a private club. Rogers went inside alone and lured Rinkle back to his home while Blackmon followed in a separate vehicle. Blackmon slashed Rinkle with a homemade sword he had fashioned from a saw blade, then he and Rogers looted the residence. Police said they took $700 in cash, a pistol, a 1922 silver dollar, rings and cowboy boots. After their arrest, Blackmon and Rogers gave taped statements and signed confessions implicating themselves in Rinkle’s slaying

At the punishment phase of Blackmon’s trial, prosecutors presented evidence that he had participated in a June 1985 double murder in Oklahoma. Blackmon was sentenced to death in November 1987. An appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court was denied March 22. Blackmon’s execution was the 17th in Texas this year andthe 181st since the state resumed the death penalty in 1982
