Isiah Patterson Case
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on March 17, 2006, Patterson and Consquelo, his girlfriend, were in his Mesa apartment with their three-year-old son when they began fighting.2 A downstairs neighbor heard loud crashes and things rolling on the floor. After about ten minutes, the noises stopped. After another ten minutes or so had passed, Consquelo ran from the apartment, naked and screaming for help.
¶ 3 Patterson chased Consquelo through the outdoor common areas of the apartment complex. He caught her at a sand volleyball pit, sat over her, and stabbed her thirteen times in the face, torso, and arm. The wounds perforated her lungs, diaphragm and spleen, and fractured her arm. Patterson continued stabbing Consquelo until a neighbor, awakened by her screams, yelled for him to stop. Consquelo then stumbled from the volleyball pit, asking for help before collapsing beneath a bush, where she died. Patterson walked back toward his apartment, telling neighbors, “That’s what happens when you try to turn a whore into a housewife.”
¶ 4 Patterson was arrested and indicted for Consquelo’s murder. The State sought the death penalty. Finding Patterson guilty and that the crime was especially cruel, see A.R.S. § 13–751(F)(6), the jury determined he should be sentenced to death.

Isiah Patterson News
An early morning argument turned deadly Friday morning when a 60-year-old man stabbed his girlfriend to death outside his Mesa apartment, police said.
When officers arrived at the complex in the 1300 block of South Vineyard at 1:49 a.m., they found a 32-year-old woman on the sidewalk by the tennis courts, police spokesman Sgt. Chuck Trapani said.
Consquelo L. Parker of Mesa was pronounced dead at the scene.
About 10 minutes after the initial 911 calls from neighbors reporting an argument and a woman’s screams, police received a 911 hang-up call from the suspect’s apartment. When a dispatcher called back, Isiah Patterson answered and then confessed to committing a violent act, Trapani said.
In a recording of the call, Patterson told the dispatcher, “I cut her with a butcher knife. She ran off, and I don’t know how she’s doing.”
While Patterson was speaking with the dispatcher, police arrived and arrested him without incident.
A witness said he was preparing for bed in a nearby apartment when he heard running and a woman shouting, “Oh my God! Oh my God! Somebody help me!”
After Eric Dickson called 911, he went outside and saw the suspect standing on his upstairs patio, looking “mellow and calm about it.”
The couple had a 3-yearold son who is now in the custody of the Mesa Police Department’s Victims Assistance Program.
