Confessed killer Roy Allen Stewart was put to death Friday in Florida’s electric chair, becoming the 33rd inmate to be executed in the state since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.
Stewart, 38, was pronounced dead at 7:11 a.m. EDT
He had been on death row for 15 years.
He was sentenced to death for brutally raping and killing 77-year-old Magaret Haizlip of Perrine in south Dade County during a robbery of her home Feb. 22, 1979.
Stewart was a neighbor of Haizlip’s. Testimony at his trial showed she had invited him into her home for a sandwich. They argued when she found him trying to steal a watch. Stewart severely beat the woman — breaking eight of her ribs — strangled her with an electrical cord, and raped her.
Stewart had confessed three times to police that he killed Haizlip — once on tape and twice in writing. He later tried to recant those confessions.
Although Stewart was scheduled to die Wednesday, a U.S. district judge blocked his execution for 48 hours while Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy reviewed Stewart’s separate requests for federal intervention.
The court denied Stewart’s fifth and final petition to block his execution late Thursday night.
Florida governors have signed four execution orders for Stewart, but he has continued to file appeals.
Retiring Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, who went on record several months ago as opposed to the death penalty, would have remained consistent and blocked the execution.
Stewart had three times previously dodged his date with the electric chair at the Florida State Prison near Starke.
