Clifton Belyeu Case

Texas prison officials have executed Clifton Eugene Belyeu by injection for the murder of a woman during a 1985 home burglary near Waco. It is Texas’ 11th execution this year, and four more are scheduled next week.

The 38-year-old former house painter said nothing when asked if he had a final statement. He was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m. while five members the victim’s family watched. Belyeu was condemned in the Dec. 10, 1985 murder of Melodie Lundgren Bolton of the north-central Texas town of West. Bolton was shot in the head and stabbed during a burglary at her rural home. Authorities later recovered $15,000 worth of jewelry and guns taken from the home. Bolton’s family declined to speak with reporters at the execution.

After the execution, prison officials distributed a half-page statement typed by Belyeu in which he said goodbye to his family and prayed for forgiveness for ‘any and all the pain’ he had caused others. He thanked those who attended his execution, called it ‘a day of joy’ and vowed to spend his final moments praying for those who wanted to see him suffer. Belyeu wrote, ‘What you’re doing here today, and what’s in your hearts here today, makes you no better than any man or woman on death rows across this country. Today, you’re committing murder too!!!’

Belyeu’s was the 118th execution in Texas since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982. Texas has four executions pending next week. Two of those inmates, Clarence Allen Lackey and Bruce Callins, have filed a joint appeal with the Supreme Court.
