Julio Rivera Case
A man has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of shooting and murdering his childhood friend in 2019.
Julio Rivera was sentenced to death for his murder conviction Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened on December 8, 2019, when the victim, Roberto Ovalle, was visiting Rivera at a storage unit in DeBary. The state attorney’s office said Ovalle had rented the unit and let Rivera stay in it.
After some time, Rivera, who felt disrespected by his friend, pulled out a gun and shot Ovalle in the back of the head. The victim died from his injuries at the scene of the incident.
The victim’s girlfriend witnessed the shooting and reported it to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Rivera had left the scene of the shooting but later returned while Volusia County detectives were investigating and was arrested.
The state attorney’s office said Rivera confessed to killing the victim in a phone call while in jail.
“Rivera was convicted of robbery and murder in New York but served less than 25 years in prison. Upon his release, he moved to Florida and executed his childhood friend within six months of his arrival,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said about the case. “Today, he was sentenced to death for the execution of his long-time friend. Florida has the death penalty for a reason – to ensure that sociopaths like Rivera cannot be released to murder again and again.”
