Maxwell Winkler Case

A Fishers teen convicted of murder in a “thrill kill” has been sentenced to 80 years in prison.

Max Winkler pleaded guilty last month to guilty but mentally ill to murder and firearm enhancement. According to the terms of his plea agreement Winkler could be eligible for parole after serving 60 years.

Winkler was a 17-year-old high school student when prosecutors said he killed 73-year-old Henry Kim, shooting him three times and cutting his throat. It happened in November 2014 while Kim was walking in a park near his home. Court records showed Winkler had a handwritten note with the supplies and steps needed to carry out a murder. In one note, he wrote himself a reminder to “enjoy the kill.

A jury trial had been scheduled to start on Jan. 19, but Winkler and his attorney agreed to a plea deal before the trial began.

Maxwell Winkler News

An Indiana teen who is the son of a local official has been charged in the murder of a 73-year-old man.

According to court documents, Maxwell Winkler, 17, will face trial as an adult in the murder of Henry Kim, who was fatally shot and stabbed Saturday night while walking in a park near his home.

An autopsy report obtained by WTHR states that Kim was shot three times — in the left cheek, back, and upper arm — and had a “deep wound across the front of his neck.”

Winkler, who Fishers Police said has autism and struggles with anger management issues, was found in the woods Monday evening.

“We’re not sure [what Winkler was doing in the woods]. We were out there searching and we were able to locate him there,” Fisher Police Sergeant Tom Weger said in a news conference following the teen’s arrest.

Authorities then searched Winkler’s home and another location as part of their investigation, recovering items they believe link him to the murder.

Winkler was arrested Tuesday morning. Police also now believe Winkler is the man who was reported pulling a knife on some trick-or-treaters in a separate incident that occurred on Halloween, the night before Kim was killed.

The boy appeared in court Wednesday, where a judge set his trial for April 7, WRTV reports. Gina Bardach, a friend of the victim’s son, was also there.

“I just kept thinking [he’d be] a grown, scary man. It was shocking. He’s just very small. A child,” Bardach told WRTV.

The Herald Bulletin reports that Max Winkler is the son of Anderson, Indiana economic development director Greg Winkler.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to both families affected by this tragedy,” Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith said in a statement. “Greg is a loving father. This tragedy in no way reflects on the superior work Greg does for the citizens of Anderson.”

Max Winkler is a student at Hamilton Southeastern high school. Those that knew the boy told WTHR that he was a quiet boy who mostly kept to himself.
