Texas prison officials have carried out their fourth execution in as many days, administering a lethal injection to Larry Wayne White. White is the seventh prisoner executed in Texas’ death chamber this month, breaking a record set in April for most executions in single month.
Another execution is scheduled for next week. In his final statement, White apologized for the pain he had caused his family and his victims’ families. He called upon veterans and teenagers with drug abuse problems to seek out help so they could avoid falling into crime. White said, ‘I did confess. I can’t go back. I just hope I’ll be going to a better place.’ The 47-year-old White strangled Elizabeth St. John and stabbed her in the back with a screwdriver in her apartment in March 1977. He stole her car and drove to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was arrested while burglarizing a restaurant.
He also was convicted in Florida of first-degree murder in the 1977 slaying of an elderly woman and was sentenced to life in prison. He was returned to Texas on a bench warrant in March 1979 to stand trial for capital murder. White is the 15th convicted killer executed in Texas this year and the 122nd put to death since the state resumed executions in 1982.
