Robert Madden Case

Texas prison officials have executed Robert Madden by injection, setting a new state record — eight — for the most executions in a single month. Madden was condemned for the 1985 shooting and stabbing deaths of a father and son, Herbert and Gary Megason, at their rural hunting cabin about 120 miles north of Houston.

During a lengthy final statement, the former cook proclaimed his innocence and called for an end to the death penalty. He also apologized for the pain endured by the Megason family and said he forgave ‘everyone involved’ with his execution. Madden said ‘Hopefully, we will all learn something about ourselves and about each other, and we will learn enough to stop the cycle of hate and vengeance.’ Jewel Megason, the wife and mother of the victims, witnessed the execution along with a daughter and brother-in-law. She later told reporters, ‘I hope he was so terrified when they were strapping him down. I loved every minute of it today. I’ve counted every hour.’ After the Megasons’ bodies were discovered, the 34-year-old Madden was arrested in New Mexico, where he used one of the victim’s credit cards. Authorities say he admitted to an acquaintance that he had stolen the Megasons’ truck and the murder weapons.

Madden is the 16th convicted killer executed in Texas this year and the 123rd put to death since the state resumed executions in 1982. The state has more than 10 executions scheduled for June.
