Todd Zommer Case
Florida Supreme Court today upheld a death sentence for a man who brutally murdered an Osceola County woman by beating her, strangling and kicking her and finally cutting her throat.
Todd Zommer confessed to several people, including several with whom he took drugs around the time of the murder, the court opinion shows.
Zommer, 38, murdered Lois Corrine Robinson, 77, at her home north of Kissimmee on May 17, 2005. He confessed in graphic detail to killing her because he thought she had seen him steal a boat. The victim, known as Corrine, knew Zommer and lent him $20 the day he killed her.
Zommer hit Robinson with an antique stringed instrument called a ukelin and also with a hurricane lamp, the court found. The 6-foot-tall, 243-pound man subsequently tried to strangle her with the cord to a computer mouse, but it tore.
Zommer stopped to use the restroom, came back and kicked Robinson in the face, stopped to get a cool drink from her refrigerator, then cut her throat with a knife he found in a knife block in her kitchen, records show.
He drove off in her car and, on April 12, 2005, mowed down a stranger from behind as the man was walking to work, court papers show. When the man reached out his hand, thinking it was an accident and he would be helped up, Zommer and an accomplice kicked him and stole his wallet.
Robinson’s body was found the same day.
Zommer was convicted of attempted murder, robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, grand theft of a motor vehicle and fleeing in that case.
During the murder trial, it was established that Zommer’s mother was an alcoholic who mistreated him and placed him in several children’s institutions — the first because he was setting fires. He also has a history of using cocaine.
A jury, by a 10-2 vote, recommended a death sentence for Zommer on Dec. 19, 2007. A judge handed down the sentence on Feb. 22, 2008, ruling — among other things — that the murder was especially heinous, atrocious and cruel and cold, calculated and premeditated.
The Florida Supreme Court found that the sentence was appropriate because the circumstances of the killing “far outweigh” any mitigating factors.
Zommer also was convicted of grand theft of a motor vehicle for stealing Robinson’s car. He has previous convictions for forgery, grand theft, burglary and trafficking in stolen property.
