Chelsea Duperon

Chelsea Duperon is a killer from Michigan who was convicted of the murder of her eight year old daughter

According to court documents police were called to the home of Chelsea Duperon due to an eight year old girl who was not breathing. When officers arrived they found eight year old Lyla Cassel with a series of bruises on her body as well as lying in a bed wearing a diaper. Duperon would tell police a ghost or a spirit told her to assault the little girl.

An autopsy would reveal extensive abuse to Lyla Cassel and the eight year old girl was unrecognizable. Another horrifying factor is the beating took place days before the child would die

Chelsea Duperon would be arrested and would later plead guilty. She would be sentenced to 28 to 50 years in prison

Chelsea Duperon Case

A Michigan mother was sentenced to up to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse in connection with the death of her 8-year-old daughter.

Chelsea Duperon, 30, was initially charged in March 2024 after Wayne County officers found 8-year-old Lyla Cassel unresponsive. The officers had been dispatched to Duperon’s home following reports of a child in distress. They reported finding Lyla unresponsive in her bed, wearing a diaper.

Prosecutor Erin Wilmoth said, “The assault on Lyla was brutal,” as she noted that the more than 200 autopsy photos showed “there was not one spot from head to toe that was not bruised or marked” on the child. Judge Charise Anderson agreed, saying she found that “Lyla was thoroughly tortured.”

Referencing the autopsy photos, Judge Anderson said they were “the most horrific photos of an 8-year-old girl I have ever seen in my entire life. It was horrific. She was unrecognizable. And it is unimaginable what Lyla went through. It is unimaginable that she sat for 2-3 days in the condition she was in and nobody thought it was prudent to give her the proper medical attention she needed

Duperon’s attorney, Tiffany Howell, conceded that her client did not seek medical attention for her daughter, but said that she did attempt to care for Lyla’s injuries. Duperon initially told police that she didn’t call for help sooner because she believed Lyla was improving.

In court documents, officers described the little girl’s condition as severe, noting that significant swelling to her face, head, and neck rendered her nearly unrecognizable. According to prosecutors, an autopsy revealed Lyla died as a result of massive blunt force trauma to the face and head. Officers reported that Duperon mentioned “bad spirits” during questioning and claimed that a woman had appeared out of nowhere. They also noticed that Duperon’s own hands appeared swollen and bruised.

Chelsea Duperon offered a tearful statement at her sentencing, describing Lyla as “the most perfect baby” and saying, “I will never understand why this tragedy has become our reality.”

Duperon’s boyfriend, who was present during the events leading to Lyla’s death, was not charged. He acknowledged that he recognized the girl was in distress, but felt it was Duperon’s responsibility to take action.

Judge Anderson sentenced Duperon to 28-50 years in prison.
