Margot Lewis Case
A jury in Minneapolis convicted a 33-year-old Iowa woman of murdering Liara Tsai, a beloved DJ in the Minneapolis electronic dance music scene.
On Monday afternoon, Margot Lewis was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, one with intent to cause Tsai’s death and the other without intent, using a dangerous weapon. The verdict was delivered after less than a week of attorneys presenting testimony and evidence to the jury.
Tsai, 35, was a former romantic partner of Lewis and court documents have described their relationship as “tense” and “painful.”
Lewis is still facing another charge of concealing a dead body in Olmsted County, but it’s unclear what will happen with that case.
The jury’s decision found aggravating factors in the case of Tsai’s death, which means Judge Paul Scoggin has the option to go beyond sentencing guidelines for Lewis.
Her sentencing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 18.
On June 22, 2024, Tsai was found dead wrapped in bedding and a mattress in the back seat of a car in southern Minnesota. Olmsted Sheriff County deputies initially responded to a report of a single vehicle crash and saw the driver of the car, identified as Lewis, sitting in a lawn chair at the median of Interstate 90 near Eyota.
At the time, Lewis was uncooperative and refused to speak to police.
The jury agreed that Lewis stabbed Tsai in her bed in her Minneapolis apartment and let her bleed to death. Court documents this week noted Lewis’s “unpredictable behavior” requires high observation in the jail.
Tsai was well-known in Minneapolis’s underground electronic dance community. Loved ones say she was admired for her musical talent and advocacy for people to be their most authentic selves. She grew up in Mauston, Wis., and lived in Iowa City before moving to Minneapolis in May, shortly before she was killed.
After Tsai was murdered, her community held several gatherings to honor her memory.

A jury in Hennepin County found a 33-year-old woman guilty of murdering her former romantic partner on Monday.
Margot Lewis was convicted of second-degree murder in connection with the death of 35-year-old Liara Tsai, of Minneapolis.
As previously reported, Olmsted County deputies responded to a crash on I-90 in Eyota, Minn., around 7 a.m. on June 22, 2024. There, they found Lewis, identified as the driver, sitting in a lawn chair in the median.
According to court documents, two good Samaritans who stopped to help after the crash told deputies they saw a deceased person in the back seat of the sedan. Deputies found a body wrapped in bedding, a mattress, and a tarp, with the head visible.
The person, identified as Tsai, was obviously deceased with a puncture wound to her neck. Court documents state that it was apparent to deputies that Tsai didn’t die as a result of the crash.
Court documents also note that Tsai and Lewis are former romantic partners
Lewis still faces charges in Olmsted County for allegedly concealing a dead body. Those charges have been on hold until the murder trial wrapped up.
Lewis’s murder sentencing is set for Nov. 18.

Margot Lewis Sentencing
An Iowa woman was given an aggravated sentence today for a murder in the Twin Cities that was discovered after a traffic crash in Olmsted County.
Thirty-three-year-old Margot Lewis was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder at the end of a trial held in Hennepin County Court in September. She was accused of murdering 35-year-old Liaria Tsai. The victim’s body was found in the vehicle driven by Lewis after she was involved in a crash on I-90 at the Eyota interchange in June of last year.
According to the criminal complaint, investigators in Minneapolis then went to the victim’s apartment and discovered a bloody crime scene. The court document states that a knife was missing from the apartment and that the autopsy determined the victim died from multiple sharp-force injuries.
The evidence listed against Lewis in the criminal complaint included video recorded from a security camera outside the victim’s apartment. The recording shows a woman, who appears to be Lewis, driving the victim’s vehicle about two hours before she was involved in the crash on I-90.
The court document also states that investigators learned the two women were previously in a relationship and that Lewis had flown from Boston to Minneapolis the day before the murder occurred.
Lewis was sentenced today to 40 years in prison.
She still faces a felony charge of interference with a dead body in Olmsted County.
