Zuberi Sharp Case
The Newbury Park man accused of killing his younger brother with a pickax in late 2024 has pleaded guilty to murder, according to Ventura County Superior Court records.
Zuberi Sharp, 26, accepted a plea deal with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office during a March 30 early disposition conference, court records indicate.
Records show he also admitted to the special allegations that the crimes were committed with great bodily injury, that he was armed with and used a deadly weapon and that the victim was vulnerable.
He did not, according to records, enter a plea for the charge of corporal injury to a child or the special allegations that he has engaged in violent conduct, inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of a felony or used a deadly weapon.
The DA’s office will dismiss the remaining charge and special allegations during the sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for May 5, records show.
Sharp remains in custody at Todd Road Jail without bail.
He initially pleaded not guilty to all charges in July after Ventura County Superior Court Judge Kristi Peariso and two psychologists declared him competent to stand trial.
Sharpe was arrested Dec. 5, 2024, on Newbury Park High School’s football field after deputies discovered a minor with blunt-force head injuries at the family’s nearby home in the 400 block of Jeanne Court, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. The 15-year-old, identified by multiple media outlets as Zayde Keohohou, reportedly died on the way to the hospital.
Sharp’s father, Calvin Sharp, was convicted of fatally stabbing a 6-year-old with a meat cleaver in 2007, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole in December 2012 and is currently housed at California State Prison, Sacramento, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
