Kristina Huber Case

Chilling details emerged today as Morgan County authorities charged Kristina Kandis Huber, 23, of Somerville with murder in the shooting death of her mother last month.

According to court documents, Huber shot her mother, Melissa Huber, in the chest on Jan. 5. The victim was pronounced dead upon the arrival of police at her home at 73 NE Hill Road in Somerville.

Huber fled the scene before emergency personnel arrived, according to an affidavit filed in Morgan County district court today by Sgt. Kyle Wilson of the sheriff’s department. She tried to escape when deputies located her at a neighbor’s residence.

“After trying to interview Kandis Huber, (Sgt. Wilson) told her that her mother was dead,” the affidavit states. “When asked how, (Wilson) told Kandis that her mother had been shot. Kandis responded by asking, ‘Was it in the heart?’ The victim did, in fact, have a wound to the heart.”

The victim’s husband, Jim Huber, told investigators that he and his adoptive daughter were the only people in the house when the shooting occurred. Jim Huber said Kandis and her mother had been arguing about putting Kandis in a mental hospital, according to the affidavit.

Wilson said in the affidavit he found two pieces of cardboard in the house — one with a homosexual slur and the other with the words, “I’ll kill you.”

Huber was taken into custody the day of the shooting on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court for a disorderly conduct charge.

Huber is being held on a $250,000 bond for the murder charge.

Jim Huber was arrested last month and was charged with shooting at Madison police and leading authorities on a chase that led to a six-hour standoff that shut down the Hudson Memorial Bridge over the Tennessee River in Decatur.
