Larry Planck III Case

Police called out to the home of Larry Planck III in April 2023 found Isabel Hernandez shot dead on his front lawn.

Family claimed Hernandez was pregnant with Planck’s child. Planck tried to claim self-defense. He ended up being charged with murder, but when it came time to sentence Planck, that charge was eventually downgraded to reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony.

On Friday, Planck was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the death of Hernandez.

But while Planck might have avoided a murder sentence, this isn’t the only conviction on Planck’s record.

The Winchester man’s crimes didn’t stop at taking a woman’s life. He also ruined the lives of others, in particular an underage girl whom Planck used for sexual gratification and forced to produce child pornography.

Planck’s child exploitation crimes were uncovered by detectives investigating the murder of Hernandez. The evidence was found on a hard drive belonging to Planck.

Last October, a jury found Planck guilty of 17 counts of child sexual exploitation crimes including the promotion of child sexual trafficking. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison.

More charges were filed against Planck after the discovery of his illicit child sexual abuse material. These include charges of sexual battery. However, these charges were dismissed around the same time Planck agreed to plead guilty to reckless homicide.

During Planck’s child exploitation sentencing, a judge noted how Planck felt no remorse for his crimes. Not for the shooting of Isabel Hernandez or for his depraved sex acts with children.

“[Planck] did not seem remorseful and even smirked when some of the evidence was presented during the trial,” said the judge who sentenced Planck to 33 years in prison.

Planck was 25 when first arrested for Hernandez’s death. With this final plea agreement, all his outstanding charges in Randolph County are now settled.

Larry Planck III News

A Winchester man has been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to both fatally shooting his former girlfriend and soliciting a juvenile for sex.

Larry Planck III, 28, was sentenced on Wednesday, Aug. 27, by Randolph Circuit Court Judge Jay Toney.

Planck was at first charged with murder in the shooting death on April 2, 2023, of his former girlfriend, Isabel Hernandez.

Winchester police sent to Planck’s East Short Street home found a mortally wounded Hernandez lying in the front yard, “suffering from a gunshot wound in the upper chest,” according to an affidavit.

The 36-year-old Winchester woman later died at a Fort Wayne hospital.

Planck told police the woman was armed with a handgun as she entered his home and that he then picked up his own 9mm firearm and “put one in her chest.”

After striking a deal with Randolph County prosecutors, Larry Planck III pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony carrying a maximum six-year prison term.

He received a six-year sentence for that conviction, with five years added because a firearm was used in committing the crime.

In addition to that 11-year prison term, Planck received a six-year sentence, to be served consecutively, for a child solicitation conviction.

In that case, the Winchester man was accused of repeatedly sexually abusing and soliciting a girl in her early teens, at one point offering the juvenile $1,000 if she would have sex with him.

Nine additional charges, including child molesting and sexual battery, were dismissed under the terms of the plea bargain.

The Winchester man won’t begin serving the 17-year sentence imposed on Aug. 27 for more than two decades.

He first must complete a sentence of more than 30 years he received in October 2024 after he was convicted of 17 crimes — seven counts of child exploitation, six counts of possession of child pornography and two counts each of child sexual trafficking and conspiracy to commit child solicitation — in another Randolph Circuit Court case.

According to state Department of Correction records, Planck is expected to complete the sentence imposed last year in March 2048.
