Nearly eight years after a woman’s body was found dismembered inside an apartment building in San Francisco’s Mission District, a jury has convicted her roommate of murder.
On Wednesday, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins’s office announced that 55-year-old Lisa Gonzales was found guilty of second-degree murder following a trial. Gonzales was charged in the killing of 61-year-old Margaret Mamer, whose remains were found by authorities on June 2, 2018.
“The jury’s verdict delivers justice to the victim’s family and friends who continue to grieve and are still deeply impacted by this heinous murder,” Jenkins said in a statement. “After nearly eight years, this conviction demonstrates my office’s unwavering commitment to getting justice for victims and holding offenders accountable.”
According to testimony, Mamer was reported missing on June 1, 2018 after her friends had not heard from her for several days and were concerned about escalating tension between her and Gonzales.
The following day, police went to Gonzales’ apartment on 14th Street after another person reported that a murder may have happened at the residence.
Police spoke to Gonzales, who said she lived with one roommate, claimed that the victim had relocated to Eureka and that she helped the victim move out the previous month. Officers searched a storage area and found a blue container with human remains later identified as Mamer.
Crime scene investigators processed the bathroom for evidence and located the victim’s blood throughout the scene. An autopsy revealed Mamer died from multiple sharp force injuries.
After Mamer was killed, prosecutors said Gonzales dismembered her to conceal what she had done.
Prosecutors said Gonzales remains in custody. A sentencing date has not been announced.
