Martin Pieciak Case

A man who stabbed his Irish girlfriend to death in a New York bar has been jailed for 24 years.

Speaking in court yesterday, Marcin Pieciak said he had no explanation for why he stabbed Sarah McNally 19 times at her workplace, the Céilí House in Queens.

Addressing Ms McNally’s family, he said: ‘I know it’s too soon now, but I hope one day for forgiveness.’

Longford native Ms McNally, 37, had moved to the US ten years ago, and was attacked at the pub in March last year.

Pieciak tried to take his own life after he attacked Ms McNally but customers stopped him.

He had been charged with murder but pleaded guilty last month to first-degree manslaughter.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Ms McNally’s killing shocked the community and Ms McNally’s loved ones.

‘With this guilty plea, the defendant has been held accountable for his actions.’

Friends and colleagues from the Céilí House pub raised more than €15,000 for her memorial fund, money that was to be handed to Ms McNally’s mother.

In a statement, her colleagues said: ‘Sarah was a beloved bartender from Queens, who was taken from us far too soon. We hope to support Sarah’s family in Ireland and raise funds in honour of her memory here in New York.

‘Everyone that knew Sarah knows how special and kind she was, how she would remember the little things about each and every person that she met. She was so beloved by her Céilí House family and beyond.’
