Convicted serial killer Richard Fox has been sentenced to an additional 25 years to life in prison for a third murder.
Fox admitted earlier this year to killing 32-year-old Crystal Curthoys. Investigators say he later had access to her home as a handyman.
During sentencing, prosecutors emphasized the impact on the victim’s family and Fox’s lack of remorse.
“We have met with the family judge and they’re unable to bring themselves to come to court,” a prosecutor said. “They don’t want their last memories of Crystal to be with this defendant in mind.”
Curthoys died in 2023, but her body wasn’t found until last year, hidden under the basement stairs at Fox’s former Niagara Falls home.
During sentencing, prosecutors emphasized the impact on the victim’s family and Fox’s lack of remorse.
“We have met with the family judge and they’re unable to bring themselves to come to court,” a prosecutor said. “They don’t want their last memories of Crystal to be with this defendant in mind.”
The victim had been missing for two years before her case was resolved.
“During that interview, he lacked any remorse… he spoke of it like you or I would speak of having lunch,” the prosecutor said.
They asked the court to impose the maximum sentence and make it consecutive.
“Each one of these victims deserves justice of their own, and each one of these victims’ families also deserve him to be accountable for his actions.”
Fox’s attorney told the court his client did not attempt to delay proceedings.
“The only things that he’s asked of me is to essentially not stand in the way of moving this case along,” defense counsel said. “He immediately told me he wished to plead to the top count… he has not wished to fight or drag this process out.”
Fox declined to speak before sentencing.
In court, the judge spoke directly to Fox, saying his history demonstrates, quote, “profound evil.”
“Your criminal history began in 1981… you have reoffended again and again and again — burglary, rape, sexual abuse,” the judge said. The court said Fox had access to the victim’s home as a handyman and killed her during an assault.
“The cause of death was sharp, hoarse trauma inflicted during a physical assault,” the judge said.
After the killing, Judge John Ottaviano said Fox hid the body.
“You concealed her body beneath the basement stairs. You dry walled over the opening. You entombed her as though she were not a person.”
Investigators later interviewed Fox.
“You said you beat her ass until she was dead and that you choked her… no remorse, no horror at what you had done. You waited.”
The judge called the case uniquely severe.
“The combination of factors present… the decades long pattern of predatory violence, the escalation of violence, the sheer number of victims… places this case in a category that this Court has not encountered.”
Richard Fox, who is serving up to life in prison after he admitted to killing two women, Cassandra Watson and Marquita Mull, whose bodies were discovered nearly two decades apart.
Investigators say that sometime around 2003 and 2004, Fox killed Cassandra Watson at a location in the City of Buffalo. Her body was found several years later by a hiker in 2021. The hiker discovered a human skull while walking along the Chautauqua Rails to Trails near Woleben Road in the Town of Portland.
A forensic analysis found the skeletal remains had been buried at the site for several years. Police were finally able to confirm her identity in 2024 after investigators learned Fox was in a relationship with Watson at the time of her disappearance. She was not reported missing at that time.
Fox also admitted to killing a second female victim at another location in the City of Buffalo around June 2021. That victim was identified as 50-year-old Marquita Mull, who was later reported missing by her family.
Mull’s body was found in September 2021 while investigators were removing skeletal remains recovered near the hiking trail in Chautauqua County.
Richard Fox also admitted to killing his own grandmother nearly 50 years ago.
Police in the Town of Brant said that in July of 1976, officers found a woman named Beatrice Meabon, who had been stabbed inside her home on Cain Road. She later died at the hospital.
Evidence eventually revealed that Fox and Meabon were related and that Fox killed her when he was a juvenile, meaning that he cannot be prosecuted for her murder.
“What this Court can do… is to ensure that this defendant never again has the opportunity to harm another human being,” Judge Ottaviano said.
