A woman pled guilty to second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with the shooting death of her 90-year-old father, according to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Jennifer Mulligan is set to receive a sentence of 40 years for the second-degree murder charge and three years for the firearm charge. The amount of time she will serve in prison will be determined by the court; however, active time “shall be capped at the midpoint of the guidelines as accepted by the Court at sentencing.”

On May 7, 2025, officers responded to the 500 block of Rodney Lane after Mulligan called 911 and reported she had shot her father. When officers arrived, they found her father, Woodard McClure, dead with a “single gunshot wound to his head,” court documents state.

Mulligan was subsequently taken into custody at the scene. Police recovered a .380-caliber handgun and a spent casing during a search of the residence.

According to court documents, Mulligan retrieved the firearm from a box in the garage. She expressed difficulty with her father due to dementia and sexual abuse of her siblings as children.

Mulligan’s sentencing is set for Aug. 4, 2026
